MP3 Music Downloads - the new black in the 2008 record biz

Billboard say that Pepsi and Amazon have been planning for 12 months for a massive joint download promotion which is expected to be announced on February 3 during the Super Bowl, in Arizona.

Pepsi's first stab at giving away free music downloads, which was conducted in partnership with iTunes in 2004, was also promoted via a highly visible Super Bowl campaign. It resulted in 5 million people downloading free songs in the space of three months.(So long ago it was Before I-Pods and Before I- Tunes)

At the same time Walmart ( a family corner grocery store) has asked that major labels supply them with music in MP3 format.

This is putting pressure on Warner Music Group (WMG) and Sony BMG Music Entertainment to follow EMI and Universal Music Group's lead in distributing their music catalogues in MP3 format.

Disney’s Hollywood Records is another major testing MP3 at Amazon and Wal Mart . The company has supplied 30 to 40 titles from its back catalogue - latest albums Atreyu and Grace Potter & the Nocturnals on the Hollywood label available are currently in the MP3 format - they are not available at iTunes….yet

Water cooler talk in the industry says Amazon will pay labels in the area of 40 cents per track. This compares with the 65-70 cents labels currently receive from Amazon for digital track sales and the 70 cents they (are saidto ) get from Apple.

The Super Bowl commercials (even without the Bears there) will nonetheless double as the coming-out party for Amazon's digital download site, which soft-launched September 25. Since then, without aggressively promoting its download business, Amazon has captured about a 3 % market share – compared with 6% of the CD market.(Billboard figures)

Wal-Mart has (up to press) some 2 % market share in the digital download market but 22% of CD sales.

Massive changes are in the wind in the music distribution world.

Amazon beefs up rare, out of print book service by buying out ABEbooks

Abebooks (formerly the Advanced Book Exchange), has been around for 12 years as an online marketplace for books focusing on used, rare and out of print titles for sale by independent booksellers - They currently list 110 million titles from 13,500 sellers worldwide and they operate from beautiful Victoria, BC, Canada with 100 of those at its Victoria headquarters they have a European office in Dusseldorf , Germany with 35 staff. (WAPO)

Abebooks also owns 40 percent of Library Thing (a social app for keeping track of your books (modest subscription required) and finding other like-minded book lovers - "Meet the world's largest book club. Find people with eerily (?) similar tastes. " ). Amazon is an investor in a similiar outfit called Shelfari -Free membership.

Abebooks CEO Dr. Hannes Blum sent an email out to its booksellers today telling it's bookseller subscribers that they have been acquired by Amazon (NSDQ: AMZN) (terms not disclosed) but would continue to operate as a stand-alone business.

Amazon (he says) is committed to further developing the AbeBooks brand and building upon the success of the past 12 years. This is not the first time AbeBooks has changed hands since being launched in 1996. Hubert Burda Media, a substantial German media company, took a majority shareholding in 2003.

Amazon already has a system for supplying hard-to-find and rare books, which incorporates a similar operation to ABE called Bibliofind a few years ago . Scuttlebut in the "Curiosa" section claims that ABE fees have been increased and sellers have been leaving "in droves".

On the basis of this, Reuters report fevered speculation that in the light of changing (ie rapidly declining personal disposable incomes) eBay (NSDQ: EBAY) would become a merger target.(!)

Amazon Fishbowl - the wave of the future

Amazon has launched Fishbowl presented by UPS and Cingular starring Bill Maher. This is the wave of the future, inter-active on line - basically in this format a step - up (but not a big one) from QVC - TV, a half-hour talk show format featuring wisecracking interviews of guests who shamelessly plug their products. (Just like they do on the MSM but you cannot order their products by the button).

The weekly program featuring the brightest stars (?) in film, music, literature, and television. New episodes will premiere each Thursday this summer at 8 p.m. Pacific Time and can be seen anytime here

On this week's show, Bill (who for some unaccountable reason some Americans find funny) interviewed Dean Koontz, author of the new thriller The Husband, and Ward Serrill and Darnellia Russell, the director and one of the subjects of the upcoming documentary The Heart of the Game. He also talked to the Dixie Chicks, who performed two songs from their latest album, Taking the Long Way. In addition, Sopranos star Steve Schirripa surprised an Amazon customer in New York with a UPS Special Delivery of his new book, The Goomba Diet.

The show in Shockwave Flash Video represents the marketing skill and technical savvy to create a watcheable program. You bet that Rupert Murdoch, Turner, Microsoft, Google, and eBay are closely watching to see if Maher's show can convert sales or at least increase Amazon's formidable audience.

It will maybe take 2 years to settle down but I am convinced this is the way forward for low cost easily delivered consumer products.... and the Dixie C's are fantastic but "Fly" is still the best.

How did sales go on Amazon after the first show on June 1st? Jeff Bezoz knows but he won't be telling anyone.

Joining the Dots Part 127 : Cambridge spies study the internet to 'Counter Militant Islamist Radicalisation on the Internet - Tony O'Reilly pays the b

Tony O'Reilly's Irish Independent has a fascinating story today about the O'Reilly Foundation making an award...."MI5 spies help student unlock terrorists' web"

Johnny Ryan (27) an Irish student is completing a ground-breaking PhD at Cambridge University under the supervision of British security service MI5's official historian.

Johnny is hoping for a Doctorate after studying how terrorists use the internet under the supervision of Prof Christopher Andrew, 67, Professor of Modern and Contemporary History, the official historian of Britain's domestic spy agency - and the University website says of him,"Professor Andrew has been a regular presenter of BBC Radio and TV documentaries on modern history and international relations". He is also a friend of popular TV historian Peter Hennessy with whom he studied under cryptanalyst Harry Hinsley. He is "very close" to the SIS and they chose him to launder and publish (In miniscule and unreadable type) the rather odd , selective and copied / re-copied KGB *** papers of Vasili Mitrokhin, memorable for in unmasking the famous "Grandmother Spy", 87-year old Melita Norwood (d. June 2005 aged 93) codenamed "Hola" by the KGB when she was recruited in Britain in 1937 + other spies****. One report says he is "Widely believed to be MI5's main recruiter in Cambridge. "

Professor Andrew is a great one for spreading the view that the short lived President Yuri Andropov, the KGB chairman had no hand in the attempt to assassinate Pope John Paul II in Rome in May 1981. He is also a passionate believer in the utility of SIGINT and other aspects of communications based intelligence...

Johnny Ryan , has already made an impact with his first book, 'Countering Militant Islamist Radicalisation on the Internet', (ISBN: 1-874-109-86-9) published by the Institute of European Affairs which was launched last year by the former chair of the UK Joint Intelligence Committee, Dame Pauline Neville-Jones.(Amazon)

The publishers blurb says ...."Violent radicalisation on the Internet is at the nexus of two key trends: the democratisation of communications driven by user generated content on the Internet; and the democratisation of strategic violence driven by mass-casualty non-state terrorism. How best can Europe capitalise on the first trend to counter the second? "

The Independent continues ..."The book argued against the European Commission's suggestion of using internet censorship to combat terror, and was heavily cited in the Commission's official impact report that decided to abandon the idea of an EU-wide internet censorship system."

Besides a fulsome review on the Amazon website from the Irish Times on 1st July (5 stars given) there are two more very fascinating reviews both awarding the book 5 stars ....

Elegant analysis of link between terrorism and the internet, 3 Jul 2007
By cormacio "cormacio" (france)

I found "Countering Militant Islamist Radicalisation on the Internet" provided an excellent overview of how the internet helps users make the transition from their home environment to a virtual world of dissatisfaction and aggression and, in some cases, on towards active participation in terrorism. The author has undertaken in-depth research and provides many illustrative examples and anecdotes. It is rare to come across a book which marries expertise on both internet and terrorism.

And the following day ...

Insightful overview with a refreshing perspective, 4 Jul 2007
By Marie Della Roche "Marie"

A meaty subject presented in such a way that those of us who are not media savvy can understand. Indeed, the reader need not be an expert on terrorism to benefit from the the authors point of view. Ryan offers an interesting view on the power of ordinary citizens and our ability to influence society through our ordinary lives. Very empowering!

Curiously both "Cormacio" and "Maria Della Roche" have never found the time, energy, effort or enthusiasm to write reviews on Amazon before (or since). Which is very puzzling because the publishers website quotes the OAP Baroness Lady Dame Jane Pauline Neville Jones

"This book is food for thought. ... We really do have a problem in society, and this is chapter and verse what this book is about." - Dame Pauline Neville-Jones, UK Shadow Security Secretary speaking at the launch of this title on 9 July 2007.

(Which was a week after these enthusiastic reviwers had bought, read and put finger to keyboard !!!! - good job someone keeps an eye on what people put on the Internet)

Quick minded readers will remember that this bears more than a passing resemblance to Ms. Plessington who on Christmas Day put up an Amazon review for Peter Neumann and MLR Smith, The Strategy of Terrorism,How it Works, and Why it Fails (Contemporary Terrorism Studies) Routledge, October 2007. ISBN 978-0-415-42618-3 (hardback) ISBN 978-0-203-93700-6 Amazon and an amazing US$130The book (published Dec 11th 2007)

*** Which he was able to do because he was given the job of packing up First Chief Directorate files in the KGB's Moscow headquarters, a massive turn-of-the-century building called the Lubyanka, and shipping them to the KGB's new quarters in Yasenevo.

Mitrokhin started taking notes on the dusty documents passing through his hands—strictly forbidden, of course, and highly dangerous. He hid these notes under the mattress in his Moscow apartment; then he transferred them to a dacha in the countryside, and finally, in 1992, he carried them with him by train to one of the Baltic countries where he, his family, and his 6 cases of materials were picked up by the British SIS. Ho.Ho.Ho.

****Other spies brought to light, partially or fully, were "Hunt," a spy recruited by Norwood but still unidentified by British authorities; "William," a trade union official who worked for the Russians in the 1970s; the British policeman John Symonds, who served as a roving agent for the KGB; and the American Robert Lipka, a clerk for the National Security Agency now serving an eighteen-year prison term for spying for the Soviets in the 1960s.

Masons,Shriners,Royal Order of Jesters, prostitutes, sex tourism, and tax exempt partying

At the risk of appearing obsessive about the secrets of Freemasonry and the sexual proclivities of public servants, the research team have discovered a curious little known pastime of an exotic branch of American masonry.

Members of the law and law enforcement figured in December in a curious sting in Buffalo, New York.

It appears 4 massage parlors in Niagara Falls, Wheatfield, Lockport and the Town of Tonawanda were raided on Dec. 10, after a 15-month investigation into prostitution allegations. One of the "working girls" who was arrested ,who, no doubt in an attempt to cut some slack told of a road trip across State Lines she took with some regular customers, a retired Lockport Police Capt. John Trowbridge and retired Judge Ronald H. Tills amongst others. Under the Federal Mann Act it is illegal to transport a woman over state lines for the purposes of prostitution.

This, a form of sex tourism, is of course a putative charge against Mr Spitzer.

The purpose of the trip, taken in a motor home, was a meeting (location / date time as yet unknown) of the Royal Order of Jesters whose motto is "Mirth is king", where it is alleged the woman was paid to perform sexual favours.

The little known (and even less understood) Royal Order of Jesters is a nationwide not for profit organisation with 191 chapters associated with the Masons with some 23,500 members who must each be a member of the Shrine of North America and the Masons.

As a result agents from the FBI and U.S. Border Patrol have been investigating the local Jesters chapter, which is known as the Jesters Buffalo Court No. 22. They soon discovered that the owner of the motor home was Michael Stebick, a part-time law clerk in the state courts in Buffalo who has previously been Judge Till's law clerk.

The Judge had been doing some work as a US$300 a day judicial hearing officer and Stebick was a criminal prosecutor with the Erie County district attorney's office. In recent years, he had worked for the state courts part time, evaluating pistol permit applications.

Both men resigned in March when press reports appeared in Buffalo newspapers.

An intriguing connection is that Congressman Rep. Thomas M. Reynolds, worked, when a student for Tills whom he praised as a "Valuable mentor" during a session of Congress on Dcember 5th 2005 and spoke of his community work and as a Director of "Buffalo Court 22 of Jesters."

On 20th March 2008 Buffalo News reported that retired Lockport Police Capt.John Trowbridge, 60, pleaded guilty to a felony violation of the federal law that prohibits transporting a woman over state lines for prostitution.

Trowbridge admitted to District Judge William M. Skretny that he participated in two separate road trips when women were transported out of state for prostitution purposes. One trip was to Kentucky in 2005 and the second was to Pennsylvania in 2006. He also agreed that ..." It was customary for these men and others, who are also members of a men's organization (The Royal Order of Jesters), to bring women to some of their meetings, intending for the women to engage in sexual intercourse and other sexual activity with the organization's members in exchange for money."

According to his plea agreement, Twobridge waived indictment and pleaded guilty to a 1 count felony, for which the maximum possible sentence is imprisonment for up to 10 years, a $250,000 fine, a mandatory $100 special assessment and three years probation. Read the plea agreement here. This involves a "Waiver of Indictment" read it here.TV reports say he will get 1 1/2 years and a US$30,000 fine.

U.S. District Judge William M. Skretny accepted Trowbridge’s guilty plea and scheduled sentencing at 9 am on July 31.

This is not the first such event that hit the courts , during a federal court case in Milwaukee, Wis., in February 1990, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, a woman admitted to a federal judge that she ran an interstate prostitution business and was hired to provide prostitutes for Jesters conventions in New Orleans, Houston, Chicago and other locations, including some in other countries.

The newspaper reported that the woman, speaking at her sentencing, told the judge that "well-to-do businessmen, mayors and aldermen" were among the Jesters' members, and that uniformed police officers sometimes provided security at the events.

There was also a remarkable news story from Winnipeg in 2001 about a raunchy Shriners fest involving lap dancers and odd activities with beer bottles and oral sex.

2 days after Trowbridge fessed up OP-ed news reported a curious legal case in the Southern District of Florida, Miami Division. Case number 07-21228, list 19 witnesses who are believed to be members of the Royal Order of Jesters (ROJ) AKA Shriners AKA Masons, who are expected to testify about fishing trips to Brazil. This an article "Masonic Jesters to Testify about Illegal Drugs, Child Prostitution?" (members) by Sandy Frost - From http://sandyfrost.newsvine.com Copyright © 2008 by Sandy Frost. Used by permission.

The case involves a libel/slander complaint which was filed on May 11, 2007 by Richard W. Schair and Wet-A-Line Tours, L.L.C., plaintiffs, who allege that they were libelled and slandered by Amazon Tours, Inc., defendant, owned by Philip Marstellar, President and Schair is seeking compensatory damages in excess of $75,000. (original complaint here)

Their company website says Richard Schair, founder of Wet-A-Line Tours, LLC, is an experienced professional tournament fisherman and ex-BASS Pro. He started fishing as a child and has continued throughout his entire life. His career includes not only tournament victories in fresh water but in salt water as well.

Approximately 8 years ago, the company switched it’s primary focus to the Amazon River Basin and the incredible Peacock Bass. At present, Wet-A-Line Tours is the exclusive representative for the Santana Yacht Line and under Mr. Schair’s direction has developed the “Gold Standard” for fishing in the Amazon region

The complaint alleges that Amazon Tours, Inc. told a group at the Miami International Airport that Schair was smuggling drugs and was using the yachts that the clients stay onboard in Brazil to move illegal drugs and that they should avoid booking any tours with the Wet-A-Line Tours, L.L.C. because of Schair's "drug connections."

Amazon answered that Schair is not entitled to any relief due to the "doctrine of unclean hands," and demanded a jury trial and submitted a Defendants' Pretrial Witness List on December 20, 2007 that lists the name, address and phone number of those so called and the subject of expected testimony. Of the 57 witnesses named, 19, or one third of them, are believed to be members of the Royal Order of Jesters. The witness list is here and contains no doubt for US citizens some fascinating names one of them is given as Don Anderson, Albuquerque, NM.

The witness list states that 19 of the witnesses were on a fishing trip to Brazil in August / SEptember 2007. 2 boats were supplied one for the Jesters and one for 20 or so girls.

Also named on the witness list are five Jane Does, 1 - 5, who each "has personal knowledge of prostitution, minor prostitution, use of illegal drugs, and/or entry into Indian reservations by Schair and/or his customers."

Five girls gave statements to Brazil federal police officers last year who are investigating "minor Indian and other girls living near the rivers in the region of the Municipality of Autazes/AM who became victims of sexual exploitation by North-American foreign tourists."

These girls told the Brazilian Ministry of Justice, Federal Police Department that they were, at the time of the alleged minor prostitution, aged 13, 14, 16. One of the 16 year olds stated that her 14 year old sister was also recruited. All the girls state they were lured onto the fishing boat by someone named "Richard."

The 13 year old reported that she was a victim of sexual abuse perpetuated by a group of foreigners, North Americans, who asked for her services aboard their fishing vessel, the Amazon Santana. The statements (oringinally in Portguese and translated) provide a sickening and through tale of the activities of Mr Scheir, his company and the autumnal trips of bass fishermen and their treatment of indigenous children. Not for the squeamish.

The statements of the girls can be read here

Another witness is Cindi Truhn of Georgia who is a former employee of Wet Line and was involved in booking trips including the one by the Royal Order of Jesters. Photographs from a ROJ tour are available here.

Sandy Frost also has a very long and detailed examination Jesters Exposed at News Vine Friday February 15th 2008. She examines the tax records in details of the ROJ which includes exemption from US$12,000 property taxes on their Indianapolis HQ - which is used a a business office by Jesters executive director Alex Rogers, who is also an attorney and past potentate and Texas attorney Ron Pruitt have listed their business addresses and phone numbers with the Indiana Supreme Court Roll of Attorneys and the Texas Bar Association as Jesters’ headquarters in Indiana and Texas.

She points out that getting laid, drunk and competing in oral sex competitions may not be illegal but tax exemption status doesn't stretch that far.

" Cassandra Sandy" is a Navy vet and says here role models are Woodward and Bernstein and Hunter S. Thompson. Read more about this indefatigable lady who has been chasing the Shriners for a long time.

Meanwhile here is a fascinating case from New York State .... October 23rd 2003 from the office of Mr Cuomo..

"Attorney General Spitzer today announced that a Monroe County couple were arrested and arraigned on a previously sealed indictment filed by an Erie County Special Grand Jury, charging them both with running a prostitution business in Erie, Monroe and Niagara counties.

The defendants, Andrew Tubiolo, 33, and his wife Jennifer, 30, are each charged with two counts of Promoting Prostitution in the Third Degree, both are class "D" felonies. They were arraigned on October 22, before Supreme Court Justice Ronald Tills in Erie County Court, who set bail for Mr. Tubiolo at $10,000; Ms. Tubiolo's bail was set at $5,000."

Two fucking hypocrites in one brief statement.

The US State Department have a site on Child Sex tourism The Facts About Child Sex Tourism ... "Tourists engaging in CST often travel to developing countries looking for anonymity and the availability of children in prostitution. The crime is typically fueled byweak law enforcement, corruption, the Internet, ease of travel, and poverty. These sexual offenders come from all socio-economic backgrounds and may hold positions of trust."

The History of Tibet - by the BBC - missing out the fascinating part the CIA have played and continue to do so

Rob Gifford has just presentd a brief history of Tibet on BBC 4 (1.30 Rpt. The CIA who have organised and sponsored riots in Lhasa and elsewhere erupted in the heart of London as a jolly Tibetan Freedom Torch Relay 2008 on 6th April, when the "Official" torch took it's 31 mile route through London.

We asked you, if you don't think the CIA should organise street marches / protests in London to write to your MP.

In a spirit of public goodwill we organised a No 10 online petition "CIA-Tibet" ..."We the undersigned petition the Prime Minister to Take the necessary steps to prevent the Central Intelligence Agency to organise a Tibetan Freedom Torch Relay 2008 on 6th April, when the official Olympic Torch will proceed through London." has been submitted to the No 10 petition site regrettably Gordon said it wasn't within his powers to stop it. Nor did he and 3,000 of London's finest failed to as well.

However if you or Rob Gifford want to learn more about the role of the CIA In the recent history of Tibet we throughly recommend ...again ...

Obtain a copy of "The CIA's Secret War in Tibet" , Kenneth Conboy and James Morrison April 2002 - 320 pages, 24 photographs, 9 maps, 6-1/8 x 9-1/4 - Modern War Studies Cloth ISBN 978-0-7006-1159-1, $34.95 (Amazon) from blurb,"how America's Central Intelligence Agency encouraged Tibet's revolt against China - and eventually came to control its fledgling resistance movement"

Mein Kampf - german Academic calls for re-publication

Hitler's 'novel', Mein Kampf (Hutchinson, 1939) was written in 1924, (actually published in 1923) nearly a decade before he came to power, but is a remarkably accurate prospectus of his intentions, not so much in terms of finite political and social aims as of the precise psychology he intended to impose on the German people and its European vassals. For this reason alone it is one of the most important books of the 20th century, and well worth reprinting, despite the grisly pleasures its anti-semitic ravings will give to the present generation of racists. How far does Hitler the man come through the pages of this book? In the newsreels Hitler tends to appear in two roles - one, the demagogic orator, ranting away in a state apparently close to neurotic hysteria, and two, a benevolent and slightly eccentric kapellmeister sentimentally reviewing his SS bodyguard, or beaming down at a picked chorus of blond-haired German infants. Both these strands are present in Mein Kampf - the hectoring, rhetorical style, shaking with hate and violence, interspersed with passages of deep sentimentality as the author rhapsodises to himself about the mystical beauty of the German landscape and its noble, simple-hearted peoples.

Part of the review by J G Ballard Alphabets Of Unreason published in New Worlds, Number 196, December, 1969.

When Hitler died 8 million copies of Mein Kampf (My Struggle) had been sold. The book, bought by the state and given out to newlyweds in the Third Reich, made him personally very rich. 6 million copies had been issued to couples by 1942. It was aboast of Hitler's that Mein Kampf had the largest sales of any book worldwide, apart from the Bible. His royalties were said to exceed US$1 million a year.

Officially, the book cannot be bought in Hungary, Israel, Latvia, Norway, Portugal, Sweden and Switzerland, but is readily available in Russia, Romania, the United States and the United Kingdom.

In 1933, Eher Verlag bought the world rights for Mein Kampf, and sold it on to other publishers for translation. In Britain, it ended up as part of Hutchinson's list. In 1939, Hutchinson commissioned a Jewish emigre Ralph Mannheim to translate the book, a choice of translator not approved by Berlin.

After the war, Mein Kampf went on to Hutchinson's backlist, but was reprinted in 1969. Richard Cohen, Hutchinson's trade publishing director in 1985, recalls the difficulties publication raised. "The questions we faced at Hutchinson were: what were a publisher's responsibilities when confronted with such a book, and should we do anything to increase sales?"

The moral dilemma was solved by describing the book as "Vile" on the dust jacket. Today's version, now published by Pimlico, still calls it an "evil" book.

Hutchinson was bought by Random House, and in an ironic twist were in turn bought by the huge German conglomerate Bertelsmann. It was an irony not lost on Cohen: "Thus Hitler's racist tract, unavailable in German bookshops, will be published throughout Britain and the Commonwealth by a German company."

In the UK, royalties went through the Curtis Brown literary agency, which, from 1976, transferred the money to a charity whose name the agency refused to reveal.

Eventually it became known that the German Welfare Council has been absorbing the royalties since 1976 who claim they distributed the cash to German Jewish refugees and, now that so few remain alive, "the trustees have decided that the funding is no longer appropriate". The balance of funds was apparently returned to Random House.

The edition still sells and is also available from Amazon

Here is a screen shot today of what browsers buy after they have looked at the page for Mein Kampf..... make of the figures what you will.

It is commonly believed that publication of Mein Kampf in Germany is illegal (there are of course many million copies extant from before the war). The copyright (part of Hitler's estate) is held by the state of Bavaria, which took over the rights of the main Nazi party publishing house Eher-Verlag -- including the rights for "Mein Kampf" -- after the end of World War II as part of the Allies' de-Nazification program. It is a paradox that Adolf Hitler, who had apparently neglected to officially register his change of residence from Munich to his Alpine retreat, the Eagles Nest in Obersalzberg, and to Berlin, and so was registered as a resident of the Bavarian capital of Munich.

Eher Verlag , the Nazi Party's central publishing house, also had its registered office in Munich, so now by chance the state government owns the rights to Hitler's anti-Semitic tirade.

As copyright holder, the state has since refused to allow the book to be published, on the grounds that it would promote right-wing extremism. The German Foreign Ministry has also repeatedly recommended that the book not be published, for fear of damaging Germany's image abroad.

They also attempt sedulously to prevent unauthorised publication in other countries. A rather seedy Polish publisher cum second hand car dealer Marek Skierkovsky (he has no ffice address, no telephone and no website) attempted to cash in on the Auschwitz memorials with an edition in 2005.ISBN number 83-921822-0-0. At 208 pages, he planned to sell it for 29 Zlotys (just over €7).

Article 256 of the Polish criminal code calls for a maximum sentence of two years in prison for anyone who "promotes a fascist form of government." However when Bavarian Finance Minister Kurt Faltlhauser sent a letter to the German foreign minister, asking him to exert his influence ... Skierkovsky simply got a bit of a grilling from the local police.

Bavarian Prime Minister Edmund Stoiber (retires Sept 2007 - opponent of Iraq invasion) pulled rank and wrote a letter to his chum Czech President Vaclav Havel, asking him to look into a small Czech publishing housewhich had a published a few thousand copies - but it appears his intervention was too late.

Until 1999, however, an English translation of Mein Kampf was the second-ranked bestseller on Amazon.com's German website before complaints from the German government and the Simon Wiesenthal Center led Barnes & Noble.com (part owned by Bertelsmann) to block German sales.
Amazon agreed to stop selling through its German site last November.

There have been irregular suggestions for re-publication in Germany.

Professor Eberhard Jäckel professor of History at the University of Stuttgart, has long supported a scholarly publication but as his book Adolf Hitler, Sämtliche Aufzeichungen published in 1984 contained forged documents made by Konrad Kujau, who also forged the Hitler Diaries which Jäckel authenticated ; his voice has been ignored.

But now Horst Möller, director of the Institute for Contemporary History in Munich, in an interview published yesterday in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung proposed publication in the form of an academic edition with comprehensive footnotes.

"As long as 'Mein Kampf' is not available in a carefully annotated edition,
there will be no end to the oft simple-minded speculation about what is actually
in the book. An academic edition could break the peculiar myth which surrounds 'Mein Kampf.'" .

The monopoly of the state's ownership will however automatically evaporate under International agreements on Copyright of Authors in 2015, 70 years after Hitler's death.

"There will be enough publishers who will want to sell it then with the inevitable sensationalism," said Möller, who argues that it would be better to produce an annotated edition which explains why Hitler was wrong now, rather than wait for a flood of uncommented commercial editions.

It is a book of tedious intensity with some extraordinary illustrations - it is essential reading for anyone attempting to understand the wellsprings of the movement which steered a nation on the road to madness, led my a madman.

It is not without it's lessons today when so many madmen run the world.

Here is a nice illustration of the state of the D mark against the US$ at the time when Mein Kampf was first published in 1923.

9/11 Synthetic Terror: Made in USA (c)

You may not have read , 9/11 Synthetic Terror: Made in USA, by Webster Griffin Tarpley which is available for US$12.21 at Amazon.

A recent (7th October 2006) review .... Among Hundreds of Books, The Strongest Approach to Truth, by Robert D. Steele is worth considering.

"I am forced to conclude that 9/11 was at a minimum allowed to happen as a pretext for war (see my review of Jim Bamford's "Pretext for War"), and I am forced to conclude that there is sufficient evidence to indict (not necessarily convict) Dick Cheney, Karl Rove and others of a neo-conservative neo-Nazi coup d'etat and kick-off of the clash of civilizations (see my review of "Crossing the Rubicon" as well as "State of Denial"). Most fascinatingly, the author links Samuel Huntington, author of "Clash of Civilizations" with Leo Strauss, the connecting rod between Nazi fascists and the neo-cons. "

"I sit here, a 54-year old, liberally educated, two graduate degrees, war college, a life overseas, 150 IQ or so, the number #1 Amazon reviewer for non-fiction, a former Marine Corps infantry officer, a former CIA clandestine case officer, founder of the Marine Corps Intelligence Center, and I have to tell anyone who cares to read this: I believe it. I believe it enough to want a full investigation that passes the smell test of the 9/11 families as well as objective outside observers. I believe it sufficient to indict Dick Cheney and other neo-cons. Sadly, the Executive is now in the service of corporations that benefit from high crimes and misdemeanors, rather than in the service of the American people who suffer great ill from these terrible mis-deeds. "

The number of sane, well educated people who cannot buy the collapse of the Three World Trade Centre Towers, the Shanksville Mystery Crash, the Missile hit on the Pentagon on 9/11. They cannot buy impossible mobile phone calls, the remarkable survival of personal effects like driving licences when 100 ton planes with indestructible titanium engines evaporate .....

Book yourself a place in one of the jails being built across America, read Tarpley's book, tell someone about it.... Find out how the Military Commissions are going to work from the inside.

Brotherly love ...

In BBC 4's Monday morning book peddling programme , Start the Week , Andrew Marr interviewed Francis Wilson whose book about William's sister, The Ballad of Dorothy Wordsworth is published by Faber and Faber.(£18.99, pp286 Amazon ) This is essentially an extended psychobabble review of Dorothy's 4 small notebooks - The Grasmere Journals produced in the period between December 1799 and October 1802, when Dorothy and William lived together at Dove Cottage in Grasmere, and which end with William's marriage.

Childhood playmates, William and Dorothy were separated on the death of their mother, when William was 8 and Dorothy 7, their father died 5 years later. Dorothy was despatched to Halifax to be raised by her second cousin, Elizabeth Threkald.

The siblings had a happy and successful menage with Samuel Taylor Coleridge in Dorset about which much has been written. Their later idyll in Grasmere, documented sketchily in her journal ended in (to Dorothy) her brother's unwelcome marriage - which she refused to attend.

(Melo) dramatically she threw herself on her brother on his return to the cottage after the wedding , and it was she not his wife who was carried over the threshold. The wedding ring (some Wordsworthian has it yet) was made a Brussels and was said to have been obtained when the pair went to meet his French mistress, Annette Vallon, mother of his child.

Dutifully however Dorothy joined the happy couple on their honeymoon and continued to live with them at Dove Cottage and later at Rydal Mount. She descended eventually into madness and spent the last two decades of her life Dorothy ended her days on the top floor of her brother's house, scratching her nurses and 'making a nondescript sound more shrill than the cry of a partridge or a turkey' or simply amused by swilling water round a bowl.

The book's blurb has it that ..."The tale that unfolds through her brief, lyrical entries reveals a strange, intangible love between brother and sister" . However Marr, in questioning Francis , gave the tale a very tangible dimension.....

ANDREW MARR : This is an incestuous relationship between brother and sister ?
FRANCIS WILSON : Well Yes ! But it's a much more complicated relationship than that .

More complicated for Fuck's sake! William sodomized her ? Introduced farmyard animals into the bedroom ? Used some antique sex toys to freshen things up ? She tied him up and used him as a toilet ? Anyway you could here Francis smile as the tills started ringing in Waterstone's.

According to some reviewers Mrs W is said to have joined in the frolics to make it a merry threesome. Who knows ? Who cares ? Probably faber & Faber and Francis Wilson's anxious bank manager.

The beautiful and haunting Rachel McKinney is a Californian by way of childhood days in Chile, Mexico, and Arizona and an adult life on the stage in New York and stars as Dorothy Worsdworth in Roan Productions film Grasmere.

The current brou ha ha about the Chinese Olympics makes one wonder why Andrew Jennings' books are not more widely read and quoted. Blairs bribing of IOC voting members

So who is surprised the Olympics fester with scandal ? The London bid - a monster deal fudged through in a Singapore hotel room by Gold Medal liar Tony Blair who was handing out "favours", political payoffs in one on one meetings with IOC members and mutual backscratching to get the result he wanted.

London beat Paris by 4 votes and the Mayor of Paris Bertrand Delanoë, was quick to accuse his opponents of bending the rules by continue to lobby IOC members until only hours before the decisive session began. Deeper, darker, dirtier deeds are the subject that swell around what Tony Blair got up to sequestered in his Raffles City convention complex in Singapore as the IOC members (64 of the 100 IOC members met and jollied with Tony and Cherie in those 48 hours) relentlessly filed in and wreathed in smiles and bonhomie, filed out.

Where are they Now ? Jessica Lynch.

Jessica Lynch. You know. The sweet, blonde, girl next door, American-pie 19-year-old soldier and kindergarten-teacher wanna-be from down home Palestine, W.Va, whose army squad, misread the map, took a wrong turn in Nasiriyah, Iraq, on March 23, 2003 and was, ...er..., ambushed.

With slaughered comrades, (Army Staff Sgt. George Buggs, 31, of Barnwell; March 23, 2003, in ambush of Jessica Lynch’s 507th Maintenance Company convoy near Nasiriyah) taken prisoner, full of bullet holes and slashed with stab wounds then kidnapped into a hell-hole Iraqi hospital and held for eight days by vicious trapist, sado-masochistic, gun toting, masked, brutal Iraqi guards then "rescued" in the most daring and macho made-for-TV moment of the war by elite teams of hunky U.S. Army Rangers and U.S. Navy SEALs. Wow.

Well the show hasn't finished yet, three years later.

Jessica Lynch, The sweet, blonde, girl next door, American-pie 19-year-old soldier and kindergarten-teacher wanna-be took another turn and is now a student at West Virginia University on a State Scholarship. She obligingly and spiritedly says, "I want people to remember me as being a soldier who went over there and did my job fighting for our country, our freedom. Nothing special. . . . I'm just a country girl at heart." (By Dale Sparks -- Associated Press)

Well the lifelong yearning to be a kindergarten teacher lasted just one one education class.

She changed her major to journalism because, " of her experience with the media" you bet, and spends Wednesdays working at the campus radio station. Still, she is unsure if journalism is in her future - fiction writing maybe after her tour de force I Am a Soldier, Too: The Jessica Lynch Story— published by major league house Alfred A. Knopf on Veterans Day.Lynch and Bragg shared US$1 Mn.advance for the book, whith a first printing run of 1/2 Mn. "Co-author" Bragg was the Pulitzer Pize winner whose memory about who wrote his stories left him tho leave the NYT rather pronto.( Amazon I Am a Soldier, Too: The Jessica Lynch Story (Hardcover) 261 used & new available from US $0.01)

The book launch helpfully co-incided with a non Jessica Lynch approved showing by NBC's airing of the movie Saving Jessica Lynch.based on the book by Iraqi lawyer Mohammed al-Rehaief, who says he helped Lynch while she was in the hospital. Lynch, however, claimed she had no memory of al-Rehaief - or the stabbing, raping, sodomising, rescue etc.,

Who can forget that heart stopping day 2 years later in April 2003 when Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge announced that Mohammed Odeh al-Rehaief, 33, "who helped U.S. special operations teams track down Pfc. Jessica Lynch", then living in the US with his wife and 5-year-old child was granted asylum in Arlington, Va., which allows him to work in the US. He can stay in the U.S. indefinitely and can eventually apply for U.S. citizenship.

Remember too how bureau spokesman Bill Strassberger said , "While humanitarian parole is not common, it can be awarded for any urgent humanitarian reason." ... oh MY god pass the Kleenex .... (Amazon : Because Each Life Is Precious: Why an Iraqi Man Came to Risk Everything for Private Jessica Lynch [BARGAIN PRICE] (Hardcover) 127 at US$0.01).The Delaware State Bar even gave the brave Iraqi a silver tray, a plaque, a US$1,000 check and a resolution recognizing his actions and making him a lifetime honorary member of the state bar.

Remember former House Speaker Bob Livingston's firm, the Livingston Group, hired Mohammed Odeh Al-Rehaief -- to advise clients seeking contracts in Iraq.

What Next ? Miss America ?

"I enjoy broadcasting, and I know I want to do something with children," she said. "I'd really like to start a kids TV program here in West Virginia. Something for kids who are in the hospital or have cancer."

Once engaged to former Army Sgt. Ruben Contreras, she now has a new boyfriend in Parkersburg. She protects details about her private life, saying only that she met him through family members.

"I want people to remember me as being a soldier who went over there and did my job fighting for our country, our freedom. Nothing special. . . . I'm just a country girl at heart," she said.

Makes you proud to be a soldier.... as Tom Lehrer used to sing.

Rosalind Franklin crystallographer died 50 years ago

Rosalind Franklin died 50 years ago , aged 37, on April 16th 1958, of ovarian cancer and related conditions, which had become first apparent in the summer of 1956.

Working with Maurice Wilkins at Kings College London , through very skilled experimental work, in altering humidity, she identified two types of DNA, A and B which were mixed up Wilkin's crystallographic prints. Having made this distinction she worked on the B type molecule and her graduate student Raymond Gosling worked on the crystalline A type.

As a consequence she was one of a group of scientists whose work finally elucidated the physical structure of DNA. Her contribution , essentially revolves around the exact way James Watson obtained site of an X ray photograph produced by Rosalind Franklin of the B or wet type of DNA molecules called photo 51 - which has been claimed to surreptitious and without her consent or knowledge. see The Double Helix by James Watson

"The instant I saw the picture, my mouth fell open and my pulse began to race.
The pattern was unbelievably simpler than those obtained previously ("A" form).
Moreover the black cross of reflections which dominated the picture could arise
only from a helical structure. With the A form, the argument for a helixwas
never straightforward.... With the B form, however, mere inspection of its X-ray
picture gave several of the vital helical parameters"

J D Bernal was later to describe these x ray diffraction photographs as, "amongst the most beautiful x-ray photographs of any substance ever taken".

Crick who had worked on the structure of Haemoglobin realised from Franklin's photographs that they predicated base pairs, along with Erwin Chargaff's essential discovery on the equivalence of the AC / GT pairs, and the double helix structure was rapidly unravelled - and with it the elegant solution to understanding replication of the DNA molecule at mitosis.

Whatever the truth, of it's genesis , in an unorthodox fashion Watson and Crick realised this photo re-inforced their stunning and original insight that DNA was a double helix (and also their desire to beat Linus Pauling who had previously suggested a tricyclic helix)which they published as a letter in Nature in 1953 - "A Structure for Deoxyribose Nucleic Acid" by J D Watson and F H C Crick. Nature 1953, 171:737-738 .. and the rest as they say is history.

A more detailed history can be found here Friday, July 20, 2007 Watson + Crick DNA / LSD / X rays and Serendipity in Science because it appears that not only Wilkins photgraphs helped them but also the novel uses of the recently discovered hallucinogen LSD, which Crick was in later life claim that it fuelled their scientific insight ... and not a few parties at which the louche ladies man would ingest.

Anyway in 1961 3 years later Watson, Crick and Wilkins received the Nobel prize for Physiology and Medecine "for their discoveries concerning the molecular structure of nucleic acids and its significance for information transfer in living material"

As Nobel Prizes are never awarded to more than a group of 3 people or posthumously Wilkins was denied a prize that many felt she was due. Including Aaron Klug ( who received the OM in 1995 and "for his development of crystallographic electron microscopy and his structural elucidation of biologically important nucleic acid-protein complexes" the Nobel price for Chemistry in 1982) who felt that the Nobel committee shoudl have given Watson and Crick the Physiology and Medicine Prize and Wilkins and Franklin the Chemistry prize.

Rosalind Franklin was a single minded, determined woman, she suffered in a predominantly male collegiate atmosphere and she did not suffer fools gladly. An Ashkenazi Jew born in 1920, the second of 5 children and first daughter to Ellis and Muriel Franklin who lived the comfortable London suburban life of prosperous merchant bankers and with powerful and influential relatives such as her great uncle , Herbert Samuel and her mother's cousin the Chinese scholar Arthur Waley. They believed girls were educated to get married and do charitable social work in adult life, Roslind was not prepared to go along with this - which didn't please her dad.

It seems remarkable today that when she received her degree at Cambridge in 1941 it was "titular" degree as degrees were not then awarded to women.

Brenda Maddox wrote a biography Rosalind Franklin: The Dark Lady of DNA (Amazon) in which she argues that sexism, egotism and anti-Semitism conspired to marginalize a brilliant and uncompromising young scientist. The book is also a dreadful feminist tract which fails to understand the way that in scientific research there is an interplay between (invariably) strong minded, very clever people in whom a streak of ruthless endeavour is a necessary and vital part of the mix. Chief of Staff of the Air Force T. Michael Buzz Moseley is sacked his EO Brig. Gen. Thomas L. Tinsley suicides, nuclear bombs, more deaths

Those who read the recent post Sunday, July 20, 2008 SLICC and Air Force graft - "Buzz" Mosley KBE gets sacked - a tangled tale of incompetence will be up to speed on the reasons for the abrupt departure on 5 June 2008 Chief of Staff of the Air Force T. Michael Buzz Moseley after he was provided with the limited options by the Department of Defense of either resigning or being fired. He , along with Air Force Secretary Michael W. Wynne, the agency’s civilian head, were held accountable for failing to fully correct an erosion of nuclear-related performance standards.

This was directly related, it was publicly stated ,to Six AGM-129 ACM cruise missiles, each loaded with a W80-1 variable yield nuclear warhead, were mistakenly loaded on a United States Air Force (USAF) B-52H heavy bomber at Minot and transported to Barksdale. The nuclear warheads in the missiles were supposed to have been removed before taking the missiles from their storage bunker... although the the SLICC, the Senior Leader In-transit Conference Capsule was in there somewhere.

A Death is reported

Folks die every day. The sudden and unexpected death of Brig. Gen. Thomas L. Tinsley, Commander of Elmendorf Air Force Base, Alaska who suffered a gunshot wound to his chest late last Sunday night and was pronounced dead within a half hour, is perhaps more remarkable than most.

Tinsley’s wife and college-age daughter were home at the time.

Col. Richard Walberg, who assumed temporary command at Elmendorf Air Force Base after Tinsley’s death said the weapon used was "likely a handgun".

Tinsley was named base commander in May 2007. He had served as an F-15 instructor pilot, F-15C test pilot, wing weapons officer, exchange officer and instructor with the Royal Australian Air Force.

Perhaps of greater interest to those interested people who find these things of interest was his previous 22-month assignment as executive officer to the Air Force chief of staff, Gen. T. Michael “Buzz” Mosely.

Representatives of the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology will do a report and declare whether Tinsley’s cause of death was suicide, Walberg said. Such reports take about 30 days.

Walberg said Tinsley was not under investigation or undue stress. See here at Celtic Diba's Blue Oasis Regarding the death of BG Thomas Tinsley--I don't know what the Air Force considers "undue stress"... ..."The most encompassing of these issues (and one that has already led to other high-ranking resignations and suicides) involve the Air Force procurement procedures and some of the projects. One of the most controversial of those is the SLICC, the Senior Leader In-transit Conference Capsule...changed (during BG Tinsley's watch) from the "Comfort Capsule.""

They also make the fascinating point that ..."the day after BG Tinsley's death there were Hearings conducted by the Senate Committee on Armed Services related to the nominations of Michael Donley as the new Air Force Secretary and Gen. Norton Schwartz to be the AF chief of staff.

There were also more hearings related to "confidential matters" scheduled for two days afterwards (Air tanker procurement ?) .We'll never know whether or not BG Tom Tinsley was contacted to participate in any of those. We'll never know if he received information of potential testimony in future investigations. Even if that is not the case, it's rather foolish to say that Tinsley was not under any "undue stress" when logic dictates otherwise."

“As far as stress, sir, this job, by nature of being an Air Force officer in a nation at war, is stressful,” Wallberg said. “Undue stress, no.”

Col. Thomas Bergeson is the former chief of the Aviation Division of Multinational Forces in Iraq.
and has taken over the post of Brig. Gen. Thomas Tinsley. Bergeson was supposed to head to North Carolina to lead a fighter wing there but was reassigned after Tinsley's death.

A God forsaken place in Alaska must have been a real buzz to Tinsley and his family after EO to the Head of the Air Force in Washington ?

Well up to a point Lord Copper

Those with capacious (even capricious) memories might recall an article by Dave Lindorff - The Mystery of Minot: Loose nukes and a cluster of dead airmen raise troubling questions - which first appeared in the October 22nd Issue of the American Conservative magazine or may have stumblled across it in the Baltimore Chronicle November 21st 2007.

Dave Lindorff is co-author, with Barbara Olshansky, of The Case for Impeachment The Legal Argument for Removing President George W. Bush from Office (Amazon) . His work is available here

The article covers what was then known of the incident when a a B-52H Stratofortress armed with six nuclear-tipped AGM-29 Advanced Cruise missiles, left Minot AFB for Barksdale AFB In Louisiana ... and nobody noticed for 36 hours.

Air Force Gen. Eugene Habiger, who served as US Strategic Command chief from 1996 to 1998, told the Washington Post (Sept 23rd 2007) , “I have been in the nuclear business since 1966 and am not aware of any incident more disturbing.”

This Air Force forum has some intersting observations from experienced (claimed) crewmen about handling nuclear tipped weapons.

Perhaps, as disturbing says the American Conservative, is that more than a month after the incident, Pentagon investigators had completely ignored a peculiar cluster of six deaths, during the weeks immediately preceding and following the flight, of personnel at the two Air Force bases involved in the incident and Air Force Commando Operations headquarters.

Sufficient to outline what is known here , read the article for the full stories ...

On July 20, 1st Lt. Weston Kissel, a 28-year-old B-52 pilot from Minot, died in a motorcycle accident while on home leave in Tennessee.

20-year-old Adam Barrs, another Minot B-52 pilot (at 20 years old ?) , died on July 5 in Minot when a car he was riding in, driven by another Minot airman, Stephen Garrett, went off the road, hit a tree, and caught fire. Airman Garrett was brought to the hospital in critical condition and has since been charged with negligent homicide.

Two more Air Force personnel, Senior Airman Clint Huff, 29, of Barksdale AFB, and his wife Linda died on Sept. 15 in nearby Shreveport, Louisiana, when Huff reportedly attempted to pass a van in a no-passing zone on his motorcycle, and the van made a left-hand turn, striking them.

2 reported suicides also took place within days of the rogue flight - Todd Blue, a 20-year-old airman who was in a unit that guarded weapons at Minot *" a response force member assigned to the 5th Security Forces Squadron") . He reportedly shot himself in the head on Sept. 11 while on a visit to his family in Wytheville, Virginia. Local police investigators termed his death a suicide.(Air Force Times) (Wordpress blogs about Todd Blue) Lt. Col. Paul Wheeless, the commander of the 5th Security Forces Munitions Squadron was fired as a result of the nuclear armed B 52 flight. The Minot AFB website has an interesting article by Lt Col Paul wheelas on November 11th 2006 about Service discipline and standards.

The second suicide, on Aug. 30, was John Frueh, a special forces weather commando at the Air Force’s Special Operations command headquartered at Hurlburt AFB in Florida. Hurlburt’s website says, “Every night, as millions of Americans sleep peacefully under the blanket of freedom,” Air Force special Operations commandos work “in deep dark places, far away from home, risking their lives to keep that blanket safe.” Frueh was a veteran of special forces combat operations in Afghanistan and Iraq

Frueh, 33, a married father of two who had just received approval for promotion from captain to major, reportedly flew from Florida to Portland, Oregon, for a friend’s wedding.

He never showed up. Instead, he called on Aug. 29, the day the missiles were loaded, from an interstate pull-off just outside Portland to say he was going for a hike in a park nearby. (It is not clear why he was at a highway rest stop as he had no car.) A day later, back in Portland, he rented a car at the airport, again calling his family.

After he failed to appear at the wedding, his family filed a missing person’s report with the Portland police.

The Sheriff’s Department in remote Skamania County, Washington, found Frueh’s rental car ten days later on the side of a road nearly 120 miles from the airport in a remote area of Badger Peak. Search dogs found his body in the woods. His death was ruled a suicide, though neither the sheriff’s investigator nor the medical examiner would give details. What makes this alleged suicide odd, however, is that the sheriff reports that Frueh had with him a knapsack containing a GPS locator and a videocam—odd equipment for someone intent on ending his life.

However Lindorff doesn't make it clear , however mystwerious Frueh's death was, what connection he had with barksdale of the flight from Minot.

Frueh's last reported phone call at Portland airport came on the same day, August 30, of the Minot / Barksdale B 52 . Frueh's position in the headquarters of the U.S. Air Force Special Operations Command "weather operations" would have given him access to a highly classified information. (Wayne Madsen)

BBC4 - Simon Gray's superb "Little Nell" - do not miss it.

The sheer quantity of drama produced on BBC Radio is astonishing, as is the consistently high standard of production . That this fertile seed bed cannot be translated to the visual medium of TV is a mystery any license payer must consider when preparing to pay up - fearful of the database, that will hound them if they fail.

Yesterday afternoon BBC4 repeated Simon Gray's "Litle Nell" , first heard on the wireless radio in 2006 and repeated, in commemoration of the author's life. He died on August 7th - not from lung cancer (he was a heavy and celebrated smoker) but from an abdominal aortic aneurysm. He was 71 and had written 35 plays.

"Little Nell" was later produced on stage by Peter Hall and had a premiere at the Theatre Royal in Bath as part of the Peter Hall Season , in June 2007. A useful review by Alison Vale is available here.

Simon Gray was inspired to write the play by the biography of Charle's Dicken's mistress written by Claire Tomalin (now 75 and married to another prolific British playwright Michael Frayn) of "The Invisible Woman: The Story of Nelly Ternan and Charles Dickens." ISBN 0-14-012136-6 Amazon for which she was to be awarded in 1990, the James Tait Black Memorial Prize.

The squalid imbroglio of the lionised Dickens and his seduction of the pretty 18 year old "actress" , her life in the shadows, his death and her subsequent marriage in which she succeeded in baffling her husband by mislaying her year of birth by a decade make a wicked tale of Victorian public piety and private sin.

The cast are all magnificent, but Monica Dolan as Nelly Ternan must make any married man longing for a lively bit on the side think again. As the wronged and kept woman she certainly made poor Dicken's pay for his sinful pleasures.

There is, as ever on BBC drama, some fine incidental parlour music from Charlotte Brennan.

You can listen again here for a week (Please note : sighs and sounds of a sexual nature which might arouse some sensitive souls)

There is a handy and brief biography of Nelly Ternan at billgreenwell.com ,one of a fascinating series of "Lost Lives" Also commended is the Postscript "Listen : Do you want to know a secret?"

Extreme Elmo

Under conditions of great secrecy Mattel have made 750,000 TMX Elmo Dolls. (TM = Tickle Me X = 10th Anniversary of the Elmo Doll) to retail at US$39.99. Winter Toy Wars has started.

Old Elmo Giggled and shook when tickled, hell look what TMX Elmo does ...

Three "interactive" tickle spots: chin, belly and foot

First tickle

He laughs, slaps his leg twice, falls down to a sitting position, then rocks himself back up while laughing.

Second tickle

Repeats the pattern, then sits down again, falls onto his back, kicks his feet and laughs harder.

Third tickle

Stands back up, asks to be tickled again, repeats first two patterns, rolls over onto his stomach, thumps his hand to "gales" of laughter, rolls onto his back, stands up again, laughs even harder.

He hit the major stores by surprise on Tuesday and there are already hundreds for sale on e-Bay below retail. Amazon are asking US$99.99 !!!!
Ain't technology wonderful. (6 AA batteries required) ... "The toy is so magical that we want to keep a little suspense around it," says Neil Friedman, president of Mattel Brands, which include Fisher-Price, the maker of Elmo. Watch Diane Sawyer on Good Morning America laugh. Wapo Chicago Sun Times UPI have stories .

Vista is a crock of shit : Part 234

History is littered with shattered dreams, vanished illusions, mirages of hope, simply, there are times when the orthodoxy of the masses was just plain wrong -- that the the Sun revolved around the Earth, disease was caused by an imbalance of the humours, when we thought reality TV was a passing fad, global climate change was anthropogenic. Microsoft is painfully aware of, if not a consensus, a widely held impression of Windows Vista as bloated, slow, annoying and not good at playing with other items such as scanners, printers ..... and it's about to spend some $300 million to convince us otherwise.

Yes Folks .

Microsoft's naive VP of Vista marketing, (there must have been the shortest queue in the world for that job) Brad Brooks, told the freeloaders and liggers at a Microsoft Worldwide Partner Conference on Tuesday that the next few months will see a major advertising push that promises to "free the people" through what Vista has to offer.

"You thought the sleeping giant was still sleeping, well we woke it up and it's time to take our message forward,"

Yeah. Well take this message Brad. Vista is a crock of shit. 37 processes must run before you can login, the hard disk chatters away all day and night when there is no-one there. It freezes..... and well here is our favourite Vista experience ever.

Can't get Trainz2006 running (odd Error mesages)

i recently upgraded to vista and trainz2006 was a nightmare to run.
but now it works perfectly including download manager
what i first done was uninstall the old version of trainz 2006.
then updated drivers for my videocard (radeon 1300) i then installed a
newer version of trainz 2006 (its called trainz railway simulator it is
actually trainz 2006 and is released by focus) i found a copy on
amazon.co.uk for £8 and it is vista compatible, install it and at the
end of the install it will ask you if you want to intall directx 9
click no, it will then intall netframework 2. after install go onto
microsoft website and download netframework 2 service pack 1 (40mb)
install update, go back to desktop and on the trainz 2006 icon right
click
and select run as administrator. when trainz menu comes up put in your
details (username etc) then run content manger.

hope this helps anyone having problems with trainz 2006 and vista

East Peasy.

PS : Trainz Railroad Simulator 2006 (TRS2006) sets new standards of realism and immersion in operating a virtual railroad. (see website)As Gemma Garrett says, click to enlarge.
