David Davis - Another silly conspiracy theory from Lord Patel

There are many observers, players, commentators, on the Westminster scene puzzled by ;
1. David Davis MP's resignation
2. The response of David Cameron in actively campaigning for and with him
3. The muted response from his Party
4. The total and rapid unwillingness of the Labour Party to field a candidate
5. The total and rapid unwillingness of the Liberal Party to field a candidate
6. The curious case of Shami Chakrabarti very publicly swinging the non - political Liberty behind David Davis's campaign
7. The curious and shadowy role of an expensive and very well connected PR company, Fleishman-Hillard in so swiftly erecting David Davis's website (not to mention the source of funds to do it etc.,)
7 (a) The clumsy attempt to conceal the role of Fleishman-Hillard
8. The extraordinary coverage that the BBC gave to David Davis across the spectrum, Radio 5 Live phone in (1.5 hr), You and Yours (1 hr), Womans Hour (20 mins), Question Time (1 hr), Any Questions (1 hr) (plus repeat and Any Answers), Newsnight ...not to mention endless news items covering the election without any opposing or dissenting views
9. The role of the new Total Politics magazine that has so mysteriously appeared, fully financed by unknown sources, and with the ubiquitous help of Shami Chakrabarti OBE CBE , Governer of the Ditchley Foundation along with Lady Dame Jane Baroness Pauline Neville Jones.

There was however, a curiously congruent and interlocking series of events also going on, which received virtually no coverage and certainly no discussion....Criminal Evidence (Witness Anonymity) Bill.

June 18th The Lords Davis ruling on anonymous witnesses published (but of course known of within Government circles)
June 18th - Also the day when David Davis applies for the Chiltern Hundreds

June 21st (Saturday) war criminal Jack Straw announces he is going to rush through legislation to allow anonymous witnesses

June 23rd Judge Paget halts trial using anonymous witnesses

On BBC June 24th Commissioner Bob Quick, for example, called the ruling “catastrophic” and criticised the criminal justice system for “too much principle and not enough pragmatism”. (This was the guy who with Sir Ian Blair couldn't remember how any terrorist plots there were when asked by MP's. see Counter terrorism Bill ..and the Old Bill... Fiction is stronger than the truth )

June 26th “Chaos as Law Lords ruin trials” (The Sun, 25 June); “Anarchyis unleashed” (The Sun, 25 June); and “Terrorists, murderers and other violent criminals will escape justice unless emergency laws are passed within weeks” (Daily Mail, 26 June).“Britain could witness unrestrained violence like the slaughter in Zimbabwe” ( Sun 25 June). (All these quoted in Liberty brief Page 4 - "Thankfully" says Liberty n contrast to the Press "Thankfully, the response of Government and opposition parties to the decision did not follow suit. It was, in contrast measured and informed."

June 26th the Government makes routine sotto voce outline the plans for legislation with dates for debate in Commons on 8th July and Lords on 10th July (Bill published July 3rd). This after cross party "consultation".

26th June East Riding of Yorkshire council announced the long, long , varied and entertaining list of accepted candidates and date of election to be 2 weeks on Thursday 10th July.

So the Bill is to be debated (?) 8/9/10th July which means press comment could be 9th/10th/11th but curiously enough they were busy looking at Gemma Garretts teeth and tits and Elvis and the Cow girl.

Of course David Davis gets his seat back, without actually having said a fucking thing, except a few mildly critical remarks about useless CCTV pictures, and DNA databases. But he and Shami had very effectively hi-jacked the so called debate on "civil liberties" - and she hen goes on to pat herself and David on the back (see top).

Debate on the Criminal Evidence (Witness Anonymity) Bill, somehow, slips by and " 42 days or not 42 days " has monopolised any concern about stealing fundamental liberties and freedoms and the proper conduct of trials. Psyops success, in fucking spades.

What about dear sweet, doe eyed, scarf adjusting, Shami Chakrabarti offering TLC to DD in late at night , heart to heart's on the cellphone? The ex Home Office lawyer whose non-political Liberty winds up supporting a politician's election, one who agrees to 28 days and the loss of habeas corpus.

Shami Chakrabarti the ex Home Office lawyer who leads the non-political Liberty but ends up helping edit Total Politics ?

Shami Chakrabarti the ex Home Office lawyer who leads the non-political Liberty who provided a brief for the Government which agrees in principle to the Criminal Evidence (Witness Anonymity) Bill.

Shami Chakrabarti the ex Home Office lawyer who leads the non-political Liberty who provided a brief for the Government written by Jago Russell & Michael Spencer which agrees in principle to the Criminal Evidence (Witness Anonymity) Bill.

Prior to his post at Liberty, Jago Russell worked as a legal specialist in parliament where he advised select committees on a range of matters including counter-terrorism laws and corporate accountability. He has particular expertise in international and comparative human rights law, the UK government’s anti-terrorism policy, constitutional and criminal justice issues and has written and spoken on these and other matters for parliamentary and wider audiences.

Nu Labour has an eye for colourful ladies they can promote Baronesses, Vadera, Amos, Scotland .... arise Baroness Shami Chakrabarti of the Pashminas .... you have earned it.... and who knows maybe to join her soulmate and phone-sex pal David will reluctantly pass on his seat at the next election to a Tory hopeful and pass onwards and upwards as Baron Davis of the Blinding Diversion

Of course Liberty will need a new leader ... someone with the right ideas.. step forward Jago Russell.

PS : Here's a nice summertime job for a media studies student .. and god knows there are plenty of them... A good detailed annotated Timeline, fleshed out with details of all press coverage / comment , of the above.

TOTAL POLITICS ... Vanguards in the fight for FREEDOM ? A tangled web of political personae, patrician's PR co, opaque funding and er... dog shi

If you are an elected representative of Local Government a new magazine will have fluttered through your letter box recently it's called TOTAL POLITICS and it has a website . Tis part of the TOTAL POLITICS website which has undergone a dramatic and recent change.

They have a Team. They describe it as ,"a mixed bunch from across the political spectrum" ..you can say that again, Editor is Sarah McKinley who many may not recognise as the daughter of Mr McKinley the Labour MP and the man who gave the murdered Dr Kelly such a nasty grilling when he appeared before the House of Commons Committe shortly before his violent, untimely, unexpected and (for the Government) very convenient death.

Their Editorial Board covers a large church, Iain Dale, blogiste, wannabe Conservative MP and it appears "Publisher" of Total Politics, plus Paddy Pantsdown , Hi Pooh Bah at one time of Bosnia and long term MI6 agent, and joined by felloe Liberal and leadership contender Chris Huhne . The spooky Ian Denis McShane of shifting nationality, name and alliances. The night time caller of David Davis (ex MP) , would be litigant of Andy Burnham the lissome ex Home Office lawyer, doe eyed scarf adjusting Shami Chakrabarti all appeared on the previous website as major names behind this project (whose funding seems somewhat unclear - well totally opaque) .

Guto Hari former BBC correspondent who just joined Fleishman-Hillard Inc., one of the world's biiggest PR agencies whose junior staff member staff Paul Borge quietly registered David Davis's website and rather rapidly switched it to DD when unmasked by blogiste (unmentioned by the incurious press / TV) but roundly criticised by the teenage hooligans who "comment" on Guido's website.

Which many considered odd because Fleishman-Hillard's , Regional Director Kevin Bell, ( ex M. Thatcher groupie and who helped Zoe Aylward on with her T shirt in DD's failed and futile leadership campaign - DD got 32.4% of the straight vote against Cameron) spoke at the conference organised by Intellect , ID Cards: Towards Procurement and Implementation a one-day conference held in London on June 6, 2005 - the Title of his talk was "Achieving public acceptance". THEN he was talking about ID cards ...now it must be David Davis who he is trying to make publicly acceptable.

Norsould we forget New Media Intelligence who worked for DD on the leadership campaign ...where does all the money come from ? They also feature Iain Dale on their client list ....Westminster Conservatives and the Westminster Council Conservative Group.

It must of course be remembered that David Davis voted for the 2nd Reading of the Governments Identituy Card Bill on 20th December 2004 before they all went away for Christmas 20.12.2004 . Along with the Conservative frotn bench.

Wannabe Green MP for Brighton and Euro MP for the Greens Caroline Lucas, Lord Trimble, the retired Prod leader for many years and now put out to grass, and SNP MP Angus McNeil who raised th e question of slimy liar Lod Levy and Cash for Coronets, and the odd Conservative leader of Westminster Council and now Chairman of the Local Government Association ("excellent") Sir Simon Milton who David Davis points out in his Guardian piece today has called for " local councils to scale back the overzealous use of local surveillance powers ", under RUPI.

Short cut to Gemma Garrett's blog and her collected speeches here

QUOTABLE QUOTES by Total Politics Groupies

"There is no question that David Davis is doing this out of principle," Daily Telegraph 15/6/08

Shani Chakrabarti, Liberty (Believers in freedom not the place where you can buy fabulous pashminas that look really, really good when it's cold and you've gt 2 minutes with somebody from Al Jazeera on St Stephen's Green)

"There is no question that David Davis is doing this out of principle," Daily Telegraph 15/6/08

"During my six months working for DD in 2005 Tony Blair's 90 day detention proposals I saw first hand how passionately he feels about this issue. It's not a matter of political conviction, it's almost as if it is in his DNA. He genuinely thinks that extending pre charge detention to 42 days will make the country less safe. It will give the terrorists a propaganda victory." Iain Dale on his Blog June 12th .. but voting as he did (and the Conservative Opposition) for 28 days in the slammer without charge, is ...well....er ... OK I suppose.

"It's like something out of Italian comic opera,'' Labour lawmaker Denis MacShane on BBC News 24.... DD gets the doe eyed maiden in the end ?

DD groupie Sir Simon Milton hit the news today as Chairman of the LGA complaining about surveillance under RUPI being used to chase up dog foulers and Hey Presto ! there is Rentaquote Shami Chakrabarti taking time off from adjusting her scarf in wild support of the DD's other friend , "This is about using quite serious powers that are meant for crime, not minor matters." Liberty ! What crimes are committed in thy name - Redux

John Wadham (57) (pic) was, like Sami Chakrabarti the Director of Liberty. he left them to become the Deputy Chairman of the Independent Police Complains Commission (IPCC). Inspired choice ! A Guardian of freedom keeping their eye on Plod.

Those readers with very long memories will remember that Sir Ian Blair, Senior and Official liar at the Met. wrote a letter to Sir John Gieve ** at the Home Office (a letter whose date was curiously wrong, mistated, misunderstood, a result of a secretaries typographical error etc..) and unilaterally, dishonestly, and illegally impeded the activities of the IPCC for at least 6 days.

During this time, Oh! Dear it was found that all CCTV filllum, hard disks, etc., etc.,from Stockwell Tube had disappeared, sightseers, eye witnesses, sworn to secrecy and threatened not to speak about what they saw etc., etc., Police wrote their hymn sheets to sing to, incontinent SAS men altered their records, gunmen guilty of murder went on holiday and every manner of Press obfuscation, disninformation, misinformation, leaking, briefing went on... not to mention all the big wigs avoiding the game of who knew what, and when, and how.

At the end of all this the IPCC enquiry headed by John Wadham, found that an inoccent man sitting on a tube train had 1/2/3/4/5/6/ /8/9/10/11/12/13 bullets pumped n his head from inches away by highly trained ( soldiers ?) as the result of an industrial accident.

The Met have pleaded guilty to endagering the public and the report will probably never see the light of day.

Worth mentioning this, as some folks feel that Lord Patel has been a bit hard on that beautiful, sweet, evidently independent minded barrister Sami Chakrabarti (37) who worked as a lawyer in the Home Office from 1996 until 2001.

We now know the State recruited, directed, controlled, savage killers, paid them , covered their tracks, facilitated their murders by removing patrols, provided weapons, and ammunition, explosives, training ... yet the idea that the State would stuff an organisation like Liberty or the IPCC with their stooges is somehow a nonsense ?

** Sir John Gieve is a lifelong Arsenal supporter (as was the philosopher and MI6 officer, Freddy Ayer - or was he a Spurs * fan ?) and was Permanent Secretary of the Home Office from 2001 and left in early 2006 to become Deputy Governor for Financial Stability, which was announced shortly after the 7/7 bombings. He was of course involved with the Sun journalist Mr Blunkett and his domestic affairs, mistresses, and their au pair, children, DNA tests, travel arrangements, etc, etc., directly, and indirectly as his wife was Mr Blunkett's solicitor and joined meetings when these matters were discussed.

The current problems of Mr Reid and the cleaning of the Augean Stables of Marsham Street have of course absolutely no connection with the interregnum from 2001 - 2006 whilst this mastermind from New College (PPE) was Permanent Secretary. Perish the thought.

The fact that we saw the trade gap go up by 25% in 2006 (National Statistical office report this week) cannot be attributed to the Deputy Governor for Financial Stability, but it does however have a major impact on the stability of the Pound Sterling.

Fortunately Dubya is doing an even worse job and whilst we don't enjoy the strength of Sterling we have a brief hour of sunshine at dusk due to the decline of the mighty Dollar and the unstoppable rise of the Euro. Which will continue when oil soon reaches US$100 a barrel.

Sami Chakrabarti is like a 29 bus..

Just when you mentin how few Sami Chakrbatis there are about - up pops Ken Linvingstone sasyin gthe demure doe eyed, ex Home Offic lawyre should exaine the case of Ian Tomlinson etc.,

Then like the 29 bus, several Chakrabartis appear.

Apparently Plod seized an obscure Tory MP's computers and set about searching for evidence of the telegenic scarf adjusting, bright eyed feminist who leads Liberty in his e -mails.

No - show.

Which may be of course because Bob Quick (now Ex - terrist in Chief) was typing in the query list and got his vowels in a twist.

Cue : Sami thinks all this raises some "important questions".

Of course it does chuck, but tell us what you think the important questions are.

Hands up those who see the "crumple zone" of dissent adroitly shroudng public dissent and argument about waht Craig Murray calls Ian Tomlinso'smrder.Stepforward the Lady Dame Jane Pauline Baroness Neville Jones, David Davis, and all the the appalling people (Andrew McKinley) in the pay of Lord Ashcroft who support both "Total Politics" the removal of habeus corpus and locking people up without charge for 29 days whist you hunt for evidence.

Tom Wise UKIP MEP - "The Cracked Voice of Freedom cries!" ... makes allegations

We have to thank England Expects for the full text of the historic interruption by the absurdly goatee bearded, fun loving Tom Wise MEP - (one of the warmed over Neanderthals that makes up the numbers of the UKIP party) into the debate on EU Energy Securitythis week. This can be found here and the recording here on blip.tv as a 2 minute MP3 file posted by Matthias at Swiss Metablog ,who has been doing a splendid job of concentrating and detailing posts and Press / TV comment on Craig's travails with Mr Usmanov's showbiz lawyers and his ex ISP.

Mr Tom Wise MP the fearless, outspoken, publicity seeking, johnny come lately, rider of passing band waggons, a newbie at the trough of public expenditure, is a recent recruit to slagging off Russian gangsters, and apparently enthralled the assembled European Parliamentary multitudes with these really stinging, forthright, biting, witty, remorselessly damning remarks ..

Gazprom is not a private company; it is a state controlled tool of Russian foreign policy. It is, moreover, in the hands of Putin's political henchmen, and allegedly organised crime.

Take for example Alisher Usmanov...... Allegedly a gangster and racketeer

What a mealy mouthed wanker !

Mr Wise and UKIP appear to have more in common with the wannabe fat , flag waving nationalist and xenophobic Uzbek / Russian, gangster, drug baron, money launderer and rapist than might first appear - although the criminality of their ex and exiled member Ashley Mote jailed for 9 months, 2 weeks ago, for massive benefit fraud (he continues it appears to retain his salary of £75 K whilst in the slammer) cannot match the likes of Alisher Usmanov and his colleagues.

Bloggers must be thankful that he raises the topic - albeit in a forum which their representatives wish to abolish but are happy to be overpaid to appear in. Those who wish to sack the citadels of power must secure them first. Would that the stndard bearers in the cause of freedom of speech were not held by the racist scum, narrow minded bigots, xenophobes and shop keepers that the UKIP are and whose constituency they so ably represent.

It is little comfort that a UKIP loony-toon is the sole Parliamentarian amongst some 1,200 MP's, MEP's, WMP's,SMP's to raise a voice for the "alleged" freedom of speech.

It is not the silencing of the blogs - it is the silence of our elected representatives, our legislators that is so shameful.

Where are Dennis Skinner, George Galloway, Tommy Sheridan , the inheritors of George Lansbury, George Brown, Michael Foot, ... what do we hear from the doe eyed, slim, beautiful telegenic, ex Home Office trained, Sami Chakrabarti with her wistful gaze and carefully tied scarf when freedom of speech is threatened ?

Members of the Sealed Lips Society.

Pic by Beau Bo D 'or who can probably soon expect a carefully drafted letter from Schhh you know who, practised and proven quasi legal extortionists to the stars and Z list celebs, crooks, cooks and con-men acting on behalf of Cadbury Schweppes plc for breach of mandamus, "pissing off", theft of trademark, bringing the company into ridicule, making jokes and compensation for damaging the reputation of a brand established in 1217 by Jacob Schweppes ... and ..er ... legal cost for typing out this letter.

PS : UKIP have a very good Policy statement on UK energy policy prepared by Gerard Batten Oct 2006 which can be viewed here http://www.gerardbattenmep.co.uk/pdf/ukipenergy.pdf

Well the analysis is clear , simple, brief, accurate and commendable. A model of it's kind which any political party could well examine and any sensible schoolchild ( the one's that can read) could understand.

The future policy is .... we are in the shit but carry on best we can.. burn more gas ... dig up more coal(- Q1 2007 Total indigenous UK production of coal decreased by 27.9% on Q1 2006) ...er ... research alternative energy .. build 10 nuclear power stations which would cost the same as the EU for 2 years ...er ..that's it.

Evidently well thought out and highly practical.... Did someone mention the debate Mr Wise was interrupting, was about Euopean energy security ?

UPDATE : 25/9/07 9.30 The text of Wise's words of wisdom, as though they had been handed down from Mt Sinai are repeated here and here . Eurasia Uzbek has a useful article here which gives some handy background and points out that fat gangster Usmanov does have some Uzbek based supporters and points to Arbuz - net and explains ... rather cautiously ..

Alisher Usmanov – an Uzbek-born Russian tycoon

While foreign bloggers and politicians continue accusing Alisher Usmanov of being (a)very shady person, Uzbek internet users support him . The reason is, first of all, for him being Uzbek and secondly, for being a link between Uzbekistan and Russia, a relationship that is very important for Uzbekistan. In general, Usmanov has (a) pretty good reputation in Uzbekistan. Moreover, there are rumors that Usmanov and president Karimov are close friends and bound by many common experiences

Michael Todd - Dead Men tell no Tales - The living are silent as well ... what happened to cop who investigated UK collusion in CIA Renditions ?

At 5.00pm on Tuesday, March 11, 2008 BBC4 "PM" programme broke the news that Greater Manchester Police Chief Constable Michael Todd had been found dead on Snowon. AT 5.06 pm we posted EX Met , GMP Police Chief Michael Todd found dead near beauty spot after long solitary countryside walk

We immediatelt reported that Michael Todd had been leading a probe into claims that CIA 'extraordinary rendition' flights had been landing in the UK, on behalf of the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO).

We pointed out that "On 19 December Liberty held a meeting with Greater Manchester Police Chief Constable Michael Todd. Chief Constable Todd has confirmed that he will look into “extraordinary rendition” flights on behalf of the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO). According to Chief Constable Todd, the police have begun initial inquiries and will follow Liberty’s recommendations for further questioning." UN Convention in Torture UNCAT Vol 2 160/6 Page 166. House of Lords report 26thMay 2006

Shag Happy top cop

Since then the UK press have revealed that a much admired cop had been, as they put it in the cateen in Stretford GMP HQ..."Puttin' it abaht a bit" and beyond a straighforward reference to his role in the "Rendition" enquiry framed the stories of an unhappy copper / troubled marriage / suicide letters (eventually denied)/ texts to ladies revealing a stressed man torn between desire and duty ... oh and a bottle , half empty / empty of "spirits" / gin.

Hidden agendas and conspiracy theories

The vast bulk of readers / viwers simply do notbelieve that the State and it's organs have a policy of killing people. Despite the lengthy catalogue of state employed assassins / bombers / double agents in Northern Ireland, Police collusion with terrorists / drug dealers over many years meticulously deatikled and published by Nuala O'Loan the Northern Ireland Police Ombudsman in her 7 year term of office. Her first report into death of Raymond McCord junior beaten to death by the Ulster Volunteer Force in north Belfast in 1997 gave details of at least 15 murders directed by a Police informant with Police approval and frequent their help.

Kevin Fulton, the pseudonymous agent has published a great deal about his experience working with MI5, how they helped obtain arms and bombing devices from the US - also his contacs with Jonathan Evans (now Head of MI5) or "Bob" and the Force Research Unit (FRU) - which may yet be revealed in court as he sues for a promised pension and new identity from MI5.

Therefore we tried to provide a possible narrative of events that led to the murder of Michael Todd, the discovery of his body, and the motives behind it ...Thursday, March 13, 2008 Another bloody silly conspiracy theory - Dead Men tell no tales Part II

Briefly, Todd had been passed over the the top Met job after Sir Ian Blair becaus of his shagging the troops (prejudicial to good order an ddsicipline) - precisely the reason he was asked to do the "rendition" enquiry by X Home Office lawyer Sami Chakrabarti of Liberty. In the way John Stalker (with his flawed connections to the Manchester underworld) could be dragged off the NI "Shoot to Kill" enquiry 20 years earlier.

Passed over and pissed off, he became a loose cannon and threatened to reveal how the UK Gubment colluded in the us of UK airports an airspace and how UK forces never "arrest"any likely lads in Afghanistan or Iraq but pass them on to the US forces for them to handle - so Mr Straw can weasel his way out of "any evidence".

Todd agreed a meeting (as did Dr Kelly) at some place, time, way as yet unknown , was transported to the mountain with clumsily contrived props, the mountain rescue were sent ona wild goos chase and then providently in the worst gale in 10 years some walkers "found" his body.

Today's Mail on Sunday and more evidence
Alan Rimmer and Andrew Chapman filed a story 'Suicide' police chief: Why didn't they call us earlier ask rescue services? in today's Mail on Sunday.

It isn't the intention to precis the article here but it reveals some fascinating details which can help update, improve and justify the theory that Michael Todd was murdered because of his involvement in the "rendition" enquiry.

1. Mr Walker, 52, head of Llanberis Mountain rescue says they were called in hours after Todd was first reported missing.

2. The pair of hikers who found what is said to be Todd's rucksack containing personal items ( and at approx 1 pm made a 999 call) were male and female , both young and one was from Brighton. He took them after they had been helicoptered in to the Mountain rescue Centre - " before long they were whisked away by a squad of police. I don't know where they went to".

3. A standard rescue involves a 36 man team, a proven method ... but at the insistence of the police they wanted a very small team.

"They used only three men and a dog, which is totally against normal practice," he said. "Thirty-six people and all the dogs are normally called out to any incident. The three men have been sworn to secrecy by police."

4. Todd's Range Rover was parked almost outside Walkers house in Llanberis - standard procedure is to locate the lost person's vehicle and break in to get sniffer dogs to raise a scent and follow it. It was only subsequent to finding the body this became apparent and GMP officers (operating on someone else's patch ?) and NW Police interviewed neighbours and villagers.

5. The helicopter that brought down the 2 walkers then took up ..."a local police officer and a member of our team flew back up the mountain in the helicopter to Bwlch Glas where the rucksack had been found. They found Mr Todd's body almost immediately.

"Mr Todd was found face-down covered in snow. A half-empty bottle of gin was found by his side. His winter jacket was also found discarded in the snow a few yards away. "

"Someone told me that they also found a bottle of champagne in Mr Todd's rucksack, a strange thing to take up a mountain. I don't know whether it was full or empty."

6. The main party of rescuers reached the body at about 3pm. By that time the weather was really closing in.

"To make matters worse, a huge Chinook helicopter suddenly appeared and tried to make a landing. It made two attempts, but it was impossible and it soon pulled off. No one had a clue where it came from.

"Six men at a time were used to carry the stretcher in relays with Mr Todd's body strapped to it down the mountainside. "

7. The rescue party eventually reached the bottom of Snowdon by 7pm on the Tuesday.
Mr Walker added: "Men in dark suits were swarming all over the place. They were not in uniform. We took it they were spooks, Government agents. They weren't normal plainclothes detectives, and they didn't introduce themselves to us."

Pushing aside requests to rush to Heathrow and solve the problems terminal 5 and re-acquainting 15,000 pieces of luggage with their owners , our vast technical staff are attempting to revise the Bloody Silly Conspiracy Theory to take account of the above.

It will be fascinating to have a chat with the two bemused young walkers who providently stumbled across the drunk ? shagged out ? hypothermic ? but definitely dead body of Michael Todd at "approximately" 1.00pm on Tuesday March 11th.

How very odd that they have remained silent - as no doubt will the 3 members of the search team sworn to secrecy.

Let's not forget that one person has already been murdered who was reluctantly involved in approving a CIA kidnapping / rendition in Denmark ...Of course the Bromma airport incident in Sweden on December 18th 2001, is the most interesting of cases where approval was given because the lady (Swedish Foreign Minister Anna Lindh) who gave the approval for the kidnapping was murdered in public nearly two years later (curiously she died on 11th September 2003 at about the time that details of the incident were surfacing publicly) – by a Kosovan hit man (Mijailo Mijailović he confessed in Jan 2004). See -Monday, December 12, 2005 - CIA prisoners Diplomatic Cover - questions to be asked - and hopefully, answered.

PS : There is of course an enquiry into the activities (extra and intra mural shagging) of Michael Todd by his fellow ACPO Vice President Sir Paul Scott-Lee, the Chief Constable of West Midlands Police, which will take a (very) long time, demand secrecy, destroy evidence and silence witnesses. (qv 3 members of Mountain Rescue Team)

One of our policemen was missing - now we know he is dead. Did he fall ? ..... Or was he pushed ?

Chief Constable Michael Todd took the responsibility to investigate the possibility that planes rented by the CIA which had transited the UK and stopped at airports nationwide on over 300 instances were carrying people for rendition elsewhere - he wrote to Ex - Home Office lawyer Ms Shami Chakrabarti of Liberty on the 5th June 2007 which was received on 8th June - by extraordinary coincidence the day that Senator Dick Marty issued the Council of Europe’s official report finding European collusion with extraordinary rendition and blanket “overflight clearances” for US military flights after 19 months of investigations.

This was not, we must remind ourselves, in any way an official enquiry, he was not empowered to seek out evidence or witnesses, no crimes had been reported or recorded, no Minister had officially sanctioned such an enquiry, it had not been approved by anybody. ACPO has no legal authority to sanction any such enquiry. Indeed the letter he wrote to doe eyed media star Sami, was on Greater Manchester Police notepaper.

"On behalf of ACPO, " Mr Todd wrote, " I agreed to look at the issues. None of the airports involved are located within my own police area and, consequently, I was able to look at the issues with a degree of independence." Ho.Ho.Ho.

"UKIS and HMRC’s respective interests in General Aviation Reports relate to identifying risk in relation to passengers declared on the form and on movement of prohibited and restricted smuggled goods. Passengers who remain on board an aircraft that lands on UK soil, for example to refuel, are regarded as airside transit passengers and not normally subject to immigration or customs control unless they seek to enter the UK. Both Services firmly point out that if their staff suspected that passengers were being transported illegally or in breach of their human rights, this would be passed to the relevant authority – most likely the Police in the first instance."

"I am encouraged by the reassurances from my colleagues in HMRC and UKIS about the action their staff would take if they thought that these offences were being committed at a UK airport. I can add that police officers would take such allegations made to them, whether from UKIS, HMRC or any other source seriously and take appropriate action including boarding aircraft, if necessary, to investigate."

It appears that no aircraft were boarded, or if they were Chief Constable Todd had not discovered any evidence that they had.

Mind you, he didn't spend a lot of time or effort in looking. Or did he ?

Perhaps Mr Todd had a very troubled mind when set out alone on his walk on Snowdon in some of the worst weather for many years - it is unclear whether he set out on the Saturday / Sunday or the Monday . (It now appears(WEd aftrenoon) it was Monday but this is not certain) Perhaps Mr Todd had a very troubled mind when we are told he leapt off that cliff on Snowdon, scattering letters to be carried away on the 100 mph winds. Then because of the impossibility of using a helicopter being carried on a bruising and lengthy stretcher journey down the mountain which must make any examination of his wounds a difficult problem.

His colleagues at GMP only became aware he was missing on Monday afternoon (Daily Telegraph today)- he was due with others at the Home Office on Tuesday morning - and raised the alarm, it was not until Tuesday afternoon his body was discovered by the Mountain Rescue Team. (watch Sky News Video link at Update at bottom of story - officers at Home Office meeting were not told why Todd was not present nor aboutthe search and learnt from Sky News of his death)

By The Way

Newsniffer has 12 versions of the BBC Online story this appeared in Version 9 at 19.20
The Llanberis Mountain Rescue Team began the task of taking his body off the mountain on foot at about 1800 GMT

Mr Henderson confirmed that the alarm was raised by walkers who found "personal effects" belonging to Mr Todd while out on the mountain.

Spokesman Ian Henderson said teams had been hampered by "appalling" weather conditions, including heavy rain and high winds, which meant rescuers could not use a helicopter

His body was spotted later about 200 yards away from the spot where the items were found, he added.

Sources at Greater Manchester Police said that among the items found with him were personal letters written to his loved ones, the BBC's Nick Ravenscroft said.

No news yet of the heroic walkers, or their pictures, or their names, or why they were out there in that dreadful weather, or why the personal items were 200yds away, or why they hadn't blown away, or why they looked.

Rgeular readers may remember Saturday, August 06, 2005 Scotsman who embarassed Tony Blair dies on a country walk. about Robin Cook who died on a highlands walk ... and those who take an interest in these matters remember ......

"Who were the so-far unidentified group of walkers (or hunters(?)) who, we were told, came to Gaynor Cook's aid? If it's not an obvious question, what were they doing on Ben Stack? For, according to the landlady of Scourie Lodge, where the Cooks had spent their last night,

"She was lucky another walker was in the area to be with her at such a time.
"You could be on Ben Stack ninety times and not see a soul, so for someone
to be within shouting distance and with a mobile phone was very fortunate."

and ...

" Although most reports spoke of a 'group of walkers', in this Times article there was only one.
Neither of the Cooks was carrying a mobile phone but Mrs Cook's cries for help were answered by a walker, who called the emergency services at about 2.23pm.

Between them, Mrs Cook, 48, and the man, who has not been named, gave Mr Cook mouth-to-mouth resuscitation and chest compressions under the telephone guidance of Inverness ambulance staff, until rescuers arrived by Coastguard helicopter at 3.01pm.

How come that heroic walker kept his anonymity? Did he, at least, give a statement to police? What about the party he belonged to, mentioned by the Sunday Times, the Herald and many others? I find it odd that no one in that group of walkers spoke to, or was spoken to by, anyone in the media or, as far as we know, the police. Was even their nationality ever revealed?"

... more fascinating details, conjecture and thought provocations at Shapan and of course nobody will forget what happened when Dr Kelly went for a walk...er..... on his own.

UPDATE : 3.00 pm GMT Curiouser and Curiouser watch this SKY video news item from yesterday announcing the news of his death we have a recording so it won't go away.

Here is the Snowdonia weather forecast issued Tuesday .. we have not yet found the one issued on Sunday ... seems just the right weather for a solitary walker on the hills. Click to enlarge.

Read what Llanberis Moutain rescue give as advice to walkers in the winter

1. Keep an eye on the Met office weather for Snowdonia for a few days before your planned a trip, as it has information of the freezing level as well as weather outlook. If the freezing level has stayed below 900 metre for a day or more you can expect some icy condition high up on the mountains.

2. If it has been below freezing we recommend that you take with you both an ice axe and crampons, as even the PYG track becomes a inclined ice rink after even a short peiod of frost due to the amount of running water on it. ....

David Davies rentagob for the Today programme - umasked

The BBC have a shock horror story online about how someone from PA consulting had a memory lapse and lost their memory stick which contained un-encrypted details about 10,000 prolific offenders as well as names, dates of births and some release date of all 84,000 prisoners in England and Wales - and 33,000 records from the police national computer.

If you are quick you can listen to the Today programme recording of Ms Montgomery mistaking David Davies Conservative MP for David Davis MP. ex Conservative front bench Shadow Home Secretary.

Seems reflexive perhaps for anyone at the BBC to assume that they are talking to the man who re-elected himself with the help of the shadowy folks*** a Total Politics, Liberty, Fleishman-Hillard Inc.,

****Iain Dale, blogiste, wannabe Conservative MP and it appears "Publisher" of Total Politics, plus Paddy Pantsdown , Hi Pooh Bah at one time of Bosnia and long term MI6 agent, and joined by felloe Liberal and leadership contender Chris Huhne . The spooky Ian Denis McShane of shifting nationality, name and alliances. The night time caller of David Davies (ex MP) , would be litigant of Andy Burnham the lissome ex Home Office lawyer, doe eyed scarf adjusting Shami Chakrabarti all appeared on the previous website as major names behind this project (whose funding seems somewhat unclear - well totally opaque) .

Not forgetting Guto Hari former BBC correspondent who had just joined Fleishman-Hillard Inc., one of the world's biiggest PR agencies whose junior staff member staff Paul Borge quietly registered David Davis's website and rather rapidly switched it to DD when unmasked by blogiste (unmentioned by the incurious press / TV) but roundly criticised by the teenage hooligans who "comment" on Guido's website.

How Lord Patel forecast the industrial slump 2 years ago based on new car registrations

Click on image to enlarge ....
We posted this modest little note Friday, March 30, 2007 UK : Number of vehicles up , new ones down

Which we tagged (very presciently) "Straws in the wind"

The total number of motor vehicles licensed at the end of 2006 was 1.4 % up on the end of 2005 at 33.4 million.

The number of vehicles registered for the first time during 2006 was 3.6 % down on 2005 (cars of all types -4.2%)

With the exception of taxis there were decreases in first time registrations for all body types. Full DVLA annual statistics

Today we discover that

Just 61,404 cars were manufactured last month, 58.7 % down on January 2008. Construction of commercial vehicles slumped by an even larger 59.9 %.

Almost all the cars made over the month - 83.5 % - were allocated for export as UK demand tails off, according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders.
We are continually told that "no-one could have foreseen" the credit crisis ... it was staring them in the face and any motor trader would have told you so.

Here is another forecast - the UK will lose 50% at leat of it's car manufacturing capacity in the next 6 months... and it will never return.

UPDATE : 9.30 GMT : Geordie lady calls up and reminds us that old horny baldy, Adam "Shagger"Applegarth was exchanging body fluids with that lovely lady from Buy to Let and simultaneously divesting not only of all his clothes (ugh) but also of all his Northern Rock shares in 2006 and Jan 2007 at the very top f the market .... so he plainly new something .. so we aren't so clever.

Wonder what the £300K per Annum Ex (very) Non Executive Chairman of NR Eton / Cambridge educated Lord Matt Ridley Esq., (He was Chairman of the curious political "think" tank , Ditchley Foundation - now followed by John Major ex MP . List of Governors makes interesting reading - inc. Ms Shami CHAKRABARTI, CBE. Director of Liberty these days) who is as silent as the grave these days;

Where do the terrists begin and the forces of Laura Norder end ?

It is quite evident that when Deputy Assistant Commissioner Peter Clarke of the Metropolitan Police "The Sphincter of the Yard" entered the quaintly named "The Ideas Space" at the Policy Exchange on Tuesday night at 6.30pm this was part of a carefully hatched and well executed publicity coup.

A large Press element thronged the place and BBC were filming this curious event which had not been advertised nor appeared in the events lists of the Policy Exchange ... even more curiously a thorough site search for said Plod yields, Zero, nada, nothing.

He spoke for approximately one hour, as the first of annual lectures to commemorate Colin Cramphorn (pic), a former Chief Constable of West Yorkshire (Died Dec 1st 2006 aged 50 of prostate cancer) known by has men as "The Gazelle" - Clarke and Cramphorn worked together on the 7/7 bombings - a somber and wide-ranging assessment of the threat facing his country according to the New York Times today ,which must have been the equivalent of Valium - because the assembled throng of Press picked up only on the one item to report. (Full text only available here courtesy Lord Patel)

Petulantly the scourge of Terrists remarked on unidentified persons leaking “highly sensitive operational intelligence, often classified.”

He cited as an example police raids in Birmingham last February when reporters in London knew details of an alleged plot to behead a British Muslim soldier “almost before the detainees had arrived at the police stations to which they were being taken for questioning.”

Well, well, well, the Press have sources ... Mr Clarke ...... do Bears shit in the woods ?

The relationship of the Press / Police might be benignly describe4d as symbiotic or more ma;ignly incestuous. Editors love a good murder / rape / paedophile attacke and memebers of the force are not averse to the odd pint or two. Evidently knowledge of this relationship has come rather late in the life of "The Sphincter of the Yard".

From this oracular, remark, loaded with zero information and devoid of substance David Cameron hounded the Prime Minister - the papers nudge nudge wink wink that one of John Reid's myrmidoms or maybe even a top cop had spilt the beans.

Yet the public are public are reminded again of a case where it was alleged without a scrap of evidence, in which no charges were laid, that the taking of a Muslim UK member of the armed forces was to be kidnapped was planned. It is to be hoped that no ambitious amateur drama company re-surrect Brendan Behan's comic tragedy, "the Hostage" lest they be charged with fomenting and supporting terrism.

All this display of naivete is quite charming when one considers his counterpart (as they say in these circles) at MI5, Mr Evans in the 80's and 90's armed, guided, supplied arms to and arranged for destruction of evidence in supporting terrorists (both Catholic and Protestant) who killed, maimed, sold drugs and bombed, all with the support of the State.

Which is, let us face it, somewhat more serious than someone letting slip to their favourite newdesk some gossip.

But of course it all helps us take our eye off the activities of the Lady Dame Pauline Neville Jones Fan Club.

It may be of interest that at Colin Cramphorn's funeral mourners were led by Sir Ronnie Flanagan, Chief Inspector of Her Majesty's Inspector of Constabulary and former Chief Constable of the then RUC, under which Mr Cramphorn served as Deputy 1998 to 2001 and took over when Flangan became an Inspector of Constabulary in 2002. The Guradian obituary spoke of Cramphorn's grasp of the bigger picture which was completed by his interest in religion and faith communities. He studied theology and law as a mature student at King's College London, and"was a voracious reader, especially of work which engaged with ethics and the impact of religious belief on the secular world".

UPDATE Mid Day

Radio 4 "World at One" spent 20 mins (out of 30 mins) on this topic and revealed onlythat ex Home Office Employee Shami Chakrabarti, the gamin , doe eyed Director of Liberty had asked John Reid in a letter at the time of the raid about leaks, which he said were "nuthin to do with me guv", Liberty have and outstanding Freedom of Information request with the Home Office which they have sought 2 delays on responding on the same matter.

The BBC report that it is also alleged that a national newspaper sent 3 journalists to Birmingham (which they no doubt saw as a great trial) the evning of the raid after having been tipped off by a nameless source.

The Guradian today make one of those worthless claims that they have been told that an aide to John Reid, the home secretary, was responsible for one of those leaks, and has also learnt that there is strong suspicion among the highest-ranking police at Scotland Yard that one of their own officers also briefed the media.

(Full text of Peter Clarke's lecture is only available here, courtesy Lord Patel - WARNING only for those with high boredom threshold and a fondness for the banal - eg " He (CC) realised that if the public are to have confidence, it is vital that policing is properly understood by those who represent the interests of citizens at both local and national level, by local and central government, by the judicial system, and of course by the media. " or "But it is important to understand that this analysis of the changing nature of terrorism did not come to us in a flash of inspiration on 12th September 2001. It came about as a result of us doing exactly what the title of this lecture suggests we should do – Learn from Experience. ) Not having learnt presumably that you do not begin sentences with a conjunction presumably.

Lord knows how many hours of Radio / TV time and acres of forests were felled to print the story that the Press were alerted to a Police raid on alleged terrists and the boss is upset. More veiled references and unpointed innuendoes than a post match briefing by Mourinho.

Liberty ! What crimes are committed in thy name ?

Slim, doe eyed, media celebritythe gamin, soulful waif, Sami Chakrabarti of Liberty has written a letter to Rt. Hon. Dr. John Reid MP, Secretary of State for the Home Department, Home Office dated 6th February 2007 (PDF file)expressing concern about ..."by suggestions from community, media and (most-importantly) police sources, that so-called “Whitehall briefings” about operational matters and ...... asking whether special advisers may have briefed certain journalists “off the record”, etc., and enclosing an FOI request ....

FOI request from Liberty to the Home Office Direct Communications Unit dated 6th February 2007(PDF file)

I am writing to request the following information under the Freedom of Information
Act 2000:

1. Details of all media organisations, specifying the newspaper, journal, magazine, radio station or television channel, with whom the Home Secretary’s political advisers between Tuesday 30th January and Thursday 1st February 2007 inclusive, discussed the alleged plot by Islamist extremists to kidnap one or more members of the armed forces, and the police’s investigation or impending investigation into the alleged plot, and/or who was briefed in relation to the same between the same dates, and/or to whom information, in whatever form, in relation to the same was provided by them between the same dates; .....etc.,"

This would of course be the same John Reid who was seen on TV saying that people should be "very careful" about what they might say about the extraordinarily well publicised raids and arrests in Birmingham of Muslims intent on beheading one of their brethren who had sold his soul to the infidel and joined their Army in the fight against the Brothers of Islam...as the Murdocj press and the others of the Gubment's media echo chamber would obediently print on the following day.

Read carefully what is requested .... if meetings happened , the cursory greeting in a corridor, urinal, by the water cooler, at a bus stop, car park ... nothing would be written down, and as journalists will never reveal sources, and Home Office officials will deny everything , .... nothing.

Which might just make the sceptical non-Metropolitan observer think that everybody rides on the same old roundabout, simply taking turns to give it a spin. Sami is an unlikely candidate for the role of Madame Roland , put to the Guillotine by Robespierre in November 1793 who prior to her savage and public beheading flung her immortal words at her accusers.

She would have to remove that carefully and fashionably tied scarf from her beautiful, elegant, swan like neck for a start.

Ian Tomlinson - Did he fall or was he pushed ?

There will be few readers who haven't seen the video the Guradian obtained from an American citizen of the violent assault ith a baton and shoving to the ground of Ian Tomlinson about 7.20 pm on April 1st and the subsequent catalogue for 5 days of lies, untruths, distortions and obfuscations of how minutes after a a few yards away he died.

As a veteran of many marches, one sequence sticks out to us - above.

A slim young, mobile, black suited, young fit male, with a top spec (but not flashy) single lens reflex camera crouches down for some pics of the fallen and injured Tomlinson. This mystery snapper must have witnessed the assault by the burly truncheon weilding PC - who has subsequently (along with other colleagues) come forward.

Suddenly whilst everyone is focussed on the stricken newspaper vendor he does a runner.

He is not a well equipped protestor.... such a person would stay and continue clicking.

He is not a pro or semi pro photographer ... who would have at least 2 cameras, bags, flash etc.,... and probably stay for more and better pics.

He is an undercover SIS / MI5/6 operator.

They appear everywhere on marches , forever on the move, very aware of their location , they move purposefully and have a penchant for wideangle rearward shots of marches face on- ideally from upper vantage points, Post Boxes, street furniture, hanging from lamp posts. Lord Patel has a library of mugshots. One turns up regular as clockwork at Stop the War meetings in the Friends Meeting House in Manchester.

A pound to a pinch of snuff these pics will never appear part of the record or be submited to the IPCC or the City of London Plods .. more than likley he was incontact with someone to outline the incident, which led to the sunsequent charge of the police to gurad Tomlinson's (then) dead body.

The first response was to rush the story aside, then to lie, but the the flood of evidence has overwhelmed the framed story .....expect ;

1. Tomlinson had 3 times the drivers limit of alcohol.
2. There were probably traces of ilegal drugs.
3. He had a knife in his pocket.
4. He had access to a computer where he worked which the Police are "looking at".
5. Even better fairy stories than we can concoct.

Slowly the "crumple zone " of the "libertarian right will get their act together, Sami Chakrabarti, David Davis, Andew McKinley, Dame Baroness Lady Dame Jane Neville Jones to impress on the public the looming threats the Police face....

All this of course has absoltely nothing to do with aresting wannabe terrists in the North West and the sad departure to a well funded retirement by the fat Plod who arrested Try MP Damian Green in a "moment of madness".

Moral - There is no such thing as an accident. Nothing occurs haphazardly.

Quite where this videocomes within the recently enacted Terrorism Act Sect 58A ish is supposed stop people snapping pics of Police officers is unclear.

“58A Eliciting, publishing or communicating information about members of armed forces etc

(1) A person commits an offence who—

(a) elicits or attempts to elicit information about an individual who is or has been—

(i) a member of Her Majesty’s forces,

(ii) a member of any of the intelligence services, or

(iii) a constable,

which is of a kind likely to be useful to a person committing or preparing an act of terrorism, or

(b) publishes or communicates any such information.

"The long term impact of the Internet" - how Lady Dame Jane Pauline Neville Jones' Fan club got to think about it

The Ditchley Foundation is one of those curious, reserved bodies that have much influence but who remain little known and their purpose even less understood - although they have a very elegant, clear, well illustrated and informative website.

Founded and funded by the donations of Sir David Wills and based at Ditchley Park in north Oxfordshire which he acquired in 1953. It , "organises private and highly focussed conferences of senior international experts to address issues of transatlantic and indeed global interest."
For readers here , one of the most interesting this year was held the weekend of June 1st - 3rd on the subject of , "The long-term impact of the internet" which was chaired by Mr Tim Gardam.

"Ditchley’s style and programme provide an opportunity for brainstorming unique in international affairs. Small invited groups of about 40 distinguished men and women are brought together from senior levels in the worlds of politics, business and industry, academic life, the civil service, the armed forces and the media. Conference subjects are carefully chosen in response to new international challenges arising from issues of concern to democratic societies. Conferences stress open, informal discussions that reflect personal thinking and take place under strict rules of confidentiality." says the website.

It would be fascinating to know who attended and what was said at that particular secluded chat. Mr Tim Gardam is of course Principal of St. Annes College, Oxford. A product of Westminster School, Gonville and Caius (Double first) BBC, inventor of Newsnight and Timewatch, and also once a Director Channel 4 who undertook for Tessa Jowell a study of digital TV in Britain.

The Foundation has a list of Governors constituting both the great and the good and many members of the Lady Dame Jane Pauline Neville-Jones Fan club - indeed, surprise, surprise she is one of the Governors. As is Sir Rodric Braithwaite , GCMG once our Ambasador in Moscow whose dulcet tones we so frequently hear on the BBC along with Ms. doe eyed ex Home Office, Director of Liberty Sami Chakrabarti, Oxford know all quasi historian Tim Garton Ash, Peter Hennessy, Peter Mandelson, the mysterious Dr Matt Ridley, Sir Crispin Tickell, Baroness Warnock, and that ever present psephologist Sir Bob Worcester.

..and it seemed like only yesterday that Clarence Mitchell of The Media Monitoring Unit (MMU), part of the Cabinet Office's Central Office of Information (COI), is considering how to add blogs and forum entries into its regular summaries of public policy coverage that are distributed to government ministers.

Hang on it was yesterday ...Government blog "monitoring" - first step to regulation, censorship ...

Now there is a coincidence.

You may be wondering what the picture of Clementine Churchill is doing here - well Winston Churchill when wartime PM used Dytchley as an alternative to Chequers in the war and the Dytchley website has some fascinating pictures of the GOM. This is the caption to the one above...

Clementine Churchill and Viscountess Cranborne in the Library. Viscount Cranborne was the Secretary of State for Dominion Affairs 1940-42, and both he and his father, the Marquis of Salisbury, were allies of Churchill and staunch defenders of white-dominated administrations within the Empire.

Ian Tomlinson's death - more inconsistencies revealed, more lies exposed

So Lord Patel's namesake pathologist said Ian Tomlinson died of a heart atttack and this turns out to be wrong - or at least another patholgist (Dr Nat Cary, one of the country’s leading forensic pathologists,)says death was result of internal bleeding.

Ex London Mayor Kenny the Red on Channel 4 says Mr Patel has a history ...Hmmmm

Then he spoils it by suggesting Shami Chakrabarti be brought in to examine the evidence.

Whoop de doo, an ex Home Office lawyer to examine what part ofthe Home Office (police) is up to ? Perhaps not.

The Tomlinson family would be unwise to accept any help from that quarter.

Star Wars - now opening at Fylingdales

The New York Times breaks the story that the USAF seeks a Presidential directive for militarising space. Just as the final instalment of Star Wars hits the screens.

Air Force spokeswoman Maj. Karen Finn is quoted , "The focus of the process is not putting weapons in space . . . The focus is having free access in space......To defend the United States of America through the control and exploitation of space."

(Global Security) currently lists a total of 135 US military satellites deployed Russian 61 , China 10 .

The US is anxious for a lead in space wars but is currently fighting the good fight against a mixed crew of suicidal muslims, car bombers, IEDs , small arms, ricin laboratories, and guys walking around New York with nukular bombs in their briefcases - all directed apparently by a guy in a cave on kidney dialysis, with a mobile and laptop.

General James E. Cartwright, head Of U.S. Strategic Command, told Congress in March:

[Our] growing national dependence on space-based and space-enabled capabilities establishes a true imperative to protect our space assets and our ability to operate freely in, and from, space.

The importance of the space mission to our national security cannot be overstated. The US economy, our quality of life, and our nation's defense are all linked to our freedom of action in space.

Probably of greater interest to those warped people who seek a deeper purpose and meaning in all that US military spokespersons say, may like to check out Tony Blair's favourite bedtime reading;

PNAC's Rebuilding America's Defenses: Strategy, Forces and Resources For a New Century (PDF):

"To ensure America's control of space in the near term, the minimum requirements are to develop a robust capability to transport systems to space, carry on operations once there, and service and recover space systems as needed. As outlined by Space Command, carrying out this program would include a mix of re- useable and expendable launch vehicles and vehicles that can operate within space, including "space tugs to deploy, reconstitute, replenish, refurbish, augment, and sustain" space systems. But, over the longer term, maintaining control of space will inevitably require the application of force both in space and from space, including but not limited to anti- missile defenses and defensive systems capable of protecting U.S. and allied satellites; space control cannot be sustained in any other fashion, with conventional land, sea, or airforce, or by electronic warfare. This eventuality is already recognized by official U.S. national space policy, which states that the "Department of Defense shall maintain a capability to execute the mission areas of space support, force enhancement, space control and force application."

Elsewhere in the real world...

This week The Ministry of Defence Police Agency (MDPA) sought an order (ASBO) banning Lindis Percy from an area around the American Menwith Hill base in North Yorkshire.

District Judge Roy Anderson ruled against ASBOs being used as "a club to beat down the expression of legitimate comment".

The powers were intended to tackle "oafish behaviour", he said, not Mrs Percy's non-aggressive protests.

She was, however, placed under an 8 week curfew and is thought to be the first peace protester to be electronically tagged - a sentence she intends to appeal. In 25 years campaigning at the site, Lindis a devout Quaker, grandmother and joint co-ordinator of the Campaign for the Accountability of American Bases has been arrested more than 150 times and spent 161 hours in prison..

Evidently this is the way the authorities intend to use the new powers, against protesters rather than the so called "yob culture" of disaffected youth, they were designed for.

Liberty director Shami Chakrabarti (BBC reports) said the ASBO hearing as "nothing short of a scandal" …."It should provide a salutary lesson to a new parliament faced with a Queen's Speech stuffed with new coercive legislation," she said. "Over-broad powers taken in the name of crime and terrorism are ripe for this kind of abuse."

The MDPA said they would "always uphold the rights of people wishing to carry out lawful demonstrations but if anyone commits a criminal offence we will seek to take action,"

The Home Office refused to comment on individual cases but said ASBOs were a "valuable tool" to protect communities blighted by anti-social behaviour.

Whether this means they will increasingly be used against protesters in the future remains to be seen.
