Chiquita claim this is due to higher sales of premium-label volumes in eastern Europe, competition for import licenses, and a reduced supply of bananas from protected sources (the so called APC countries of the ex French / Portuguese and UK Empire in the Caribbean etc.,) plus the effect of higher delivery costs for fuel and shipping.
The company announced last week after Katrina passed through their Gulfport terminal that, "While we are still assessing the situation, it is clear that we will need to relocate our services from Gulfport for the foreseeable future."
