Wall Street Journal report today ..."Investigators are finding "falsified records" at the investment advisory arm of Bernard L. Madoff Investment Securities LLC, said Stephen Harbeck, chief executive of nonprofit group Securities Investor Protection Corp., which is helping oversee the liquidation Madoff, in an interview."
Senator Evan Bayh (D-Ind) advised Paulson that he needed to be less worried about what the committee thought and more concerned about the reactions of ordinary Americans. “There’s a lot of anger out there. Most people want to hang these wheeler dealers from the nearest lamp post.”
“I couldn’t agree with them more, Senator,” replied Paulson. “I feel the pain of the American people on this one. I can tell you that I was truly shocked, shocked! to discover that there was gambling taking place in the backrooms of Wall Street.”
