An apology is due

The demands for apologies (and reparation) for slavery rise daily. These worthy and windy homilies are pointless and have no utility , as they refer to events , as the law has it, "beyond human memory" - and certainly beyond the experience of the apologist.

Yesterday the ever-excellent "Womans Hour" had an interview with an elderly Dutch lady who, as a teenger had been forced to act as a "comfort" woman for the Japanese military. She explained in excruciating and vivid toe curling detail her personal experience. Evidently moved, a representative from the Japanese Government explained th system by which a fund would pay £15,000 to victims which were accompanied by a letter from the Government. Which ,whilst it does not meet the expectations of everyone is some ofocial and tangible form of apology.

Wouldn't it be refreshing if some form of apology might be made say by Jonathan Evans who takes over from Dame Eliza Manningham-Buller who is retiring as head of MI 5 to spend more time with her corsets? .. whilst events in the murky war in Northern Ireland are still within human memory ?

It was he (known as "Bob") who as the Sunday Times recently explained was tipped off about the intended attack leading to the murder of Protestant RUC officer Colleen McMurray (pic) in Merchants Quay, Newry , whose family will poignantly recall was almost exactly 15 years agolate at night on March 27th 1992 , by Kevin Fulton, a former British agent in the IRA who worked for Force Research Unit, a covert branch of the Intelligence Corps set up to infiltrate paramilitary groups.

In the attack on Mc Murray (using technology acquired with the help of MI5) her colleague Paul Slaine lost both his legs in the attack and he was later awarded the George Cross for his bravery (BBC).... unlike PC Stephen Oake.

Wouldn't it be good for the US nation to apologise to the individuals they treated so appallingly as liberators at Abu Ghraib... they know who they are, they know who tortured or killed them.

Wouldn't it be good for the the politicians , Ministers and PR pimps, in the UK who supported our ally in this despicable treatment apologise, Blair, Goldsmith, Hoon, Straw,Clarke, Reid, Meacher, Beckett, Hewitt, Amos, Campbell et.al, liars all ,who plunged us all into the shameful military adventure.

Such apologies would carry weight and meaning.

They would be a welcome surprise.

PC Oake - victim of the Metropolitan / Manchester Police - and when dead, of the Government

Earlier this month Pc Clive Chamberlain, Dorset Police Federation chairman , posted his long service and Queen's Jubilee medals back to the Prime Minister in protest when PC Stephen Oake was deniedthe award of a George Cross. (Stephen was the son of Robin Oake once ACC of the GMP and also CC of the Isle of Man Constabulary)

He had been nominated by for the George Cross, the highest civilian gallantry award, by the Chief Constable of GMP, Michael Todd. Tony Blair refused to intervene, although he had not failed to miss the photo opportunity to be present with Cherie at his funera in Manchester Cathedral. His official spkoesman said.."''It wouldn't be right for the PM to interfere in the Awards process'' ... Ho.Ho.Ho. (Perhaps the Karaoke King hadn't rcvd a backhander "loan". ?)

A Prime Ministers petition to reverse the decision and award the medal , on the No 10 website obtained 8,000 signaturers before closing.

The 40 year old GMP policeman, Stephen Oake was sent to a flat in Crumpsall, N Manchester in January 4 years ago . He didn't know what he was there for, and neither would the Metropolitan Police tell the GMP why they wanted the occupants. There was what is called a, "breakdown in communications"... it was a breakdown that lead to Pc Oake's sudden death and destroyed the life of his wife and child.

One of the people in the flat was an alleged Al Quaeda operative, Kamel Bourgass , who was connected with the massive non producing "ricin" factory. After an hour when no-one knew what was going on and nobody had been arrested, Bourgass, one of the 4 men in the flat, got a kitchen knife out of a kitchen door and fatally stabbed PC Oake who was in plain clothes and not wearing protective body armour. The HSE undertook an enquiry as GMP policy is that uniformed officers must wear vests on duty. However, detectives only have to wear them if the risk evaluation reveals potential physical danger. The HSE inquiry examined the intelligence provided before the raid and the briefing given to the officers before they went into the address. They took no action.

It subsequently turned out after the trial that Bourgass was a failed asylum seeker who had not been deported - Tory vice-chair Dr Liam Fox , claimed, that as a result the government were "culpable" for PC Oake's death.)

An inscribed granite stone trimmed with gold was erected 6 months ago outside the Crumpsall flat where Stephen Oake died which was paid for by Michael Winner’s Police Memorial Trust.

Overnight on Tuesday this memorial has been smashed and pieces thrown into the car park of Cheetham Hill Police Station, just over a mile away.

The pieces of stone damaged two marked police cars and another car belonging to an officer at the station in Cheetham Hill Road. No one was about at the time and no one was injured.

His father Robin said: "He would not have wanted any recognition, he was doing it for his colleagues." He added: "Certainly his bravery needed some recognition and he got that of course at the Old Bailey trial. "At the end of the day, as a Christian man, Steve's reward is in heaven."

Paul Kelly, chairman of the Greater Manchester Police Federation of the decision to refuse the George Medal....

"If - as I believe - the Prime Minister is aware of this decision and concurs with it, then he has let down Stephen, his family, my colleagues and every law enforcement officer in the country. He threw himself into extreme danger when he could have stepped aside and waited for back-up. He is a true hero and I am sickened by this decision."

Here is a description of the murder by a UK leading journalist, a great friend of the forces of Laura Norder just after the Bourgass trial .... One million pounds to whoever identifies the author.. (usual rules apply)

Scotland Yard’s anti-terrorism squad appears to have destroyed a particular terrorist cell of which Bourgass was a member, the operation which netted him by Manchester police, in which Bourgass managed to kill DC Oake, was a sorry saga of eye-watering incompetence.

Advance surveillance of a flat which was thought to house a terrorism suspect failed to uncover the fact that Bourgass was there too. The pre-operation briefing, which was in many respects utterly inadequate, took place in a noisy police station garage so that at least one officer had difficulty hearing.

The police team did not take specialist arrest kits. Officers found that their mobile phones would not work. None of the officers was wearing body armour, and Bourgass was not handcuffed.

The officer in charge of this debacle has reportedly been disciplined - but is still employed somewhere in the police service. In other words, no-one has taken responsibility for a display of professional incompetence which left an officer dead.

Iowa - protecting the farmer's fuels and the Smithsonian

They were dancing in the streets of Des Moines, Iowa (pic) when US Senators Jeff Bingaman (D-NM) and Pete Domenici (R-NM), respectively chairman and ranking member of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, introduced the Biofuels for Energy Security and Transportation Act of 2007” (S.987). Thus effectively putting a floor under the price of corn, farmers earnings, land values, and boosting the US agrochemical industry and the farm machinery makers.

Following on POTUS's call in the State of the Union speech for the use of 35 billion gallons of alternative fuels by 2017 they have framed a requirement that increases the required renewable fuel standard from 8.5 billion gallons in 2008 to 36 billion gallons in 2022 which they place a national upper limit on the use of corn for ethanol of 15 billion gallons and remainder from biomass such cellulosic ethanol, biobutanol and other fuels derived from unconventional biomass feedstocks - crop residue, switchgrass and forestry waste.

Whilst they have stretched the POTUS's time frame by 5 years they do not include coal derived fuels, as he suggested.

Naturally the far sighted farmers of the mid-west have more immediate concerns such as the extending the tax credits that subsidize ethanol and biodiesel and increasing the number of service stations that actually sell the finished product - vehicle fuels with 15% ethanol, or E85 - not that they intend to pay for them - they expect the mineral oil distillers and refiners to sell the stuff in competition to their gasoline.

Corn growers naturally see a 15 Billion gallon limit as unhelpful - "Over the long haul, to say that once we get 15 billion gallons (of corn ethanol) we really don't want any more is not a good thing to do," Monte Shaw, executive director of the Iowa Renewable Fuels Association said on hearing the details of the proposed bill.

Sen. Charles Grassley, R and Sen. Tom Harkin, D both representing Iowa ,being good country farmer boys were cautious and protective , Sucking on a corn stalk , "Any focus on making our country less dependent on foreign sources of oil is beneficial as long as it doesn't harm or handcuff the existing industry that is making great strides toward energy independence," said Grassley .

Tom Harkin likes the idea but wants more folks selling the stuff and the car industry (if there is any left by 2017 ) should be made to build more flex-fuel vehicles. Judging by the way they have refused to cut fuel consumption of new vehicles for the last 20 years , he is SOL on that one.

Don't expect this one to swish through on the nod ...there are lots of vested interests at work here, oil, coal, agriculture to name the smaller ones - as well as the Indiana boondogglers building ethanol refineries like Levittowns.

Small problem at the Smithsonian

It's good to see Charles Grassley in the news again - last week he got the Senate to freeze a $17 million Smithsonian budget increase (70% of their funding is federal - US$715 Mn. last year) when he exposed their spending habits , in a report which he had demanded as chairman of the Senate Finance Committee;

Lawrence M. Small, who was previously an executive at Citibank and Fannie Mae, is only the second non-scientist to serve as Smithsonian secretary in the organization's 160 years. On appointment, the Board of Regents said, " his business acumen would help improve the organization's finances."

Well certainly Small saw his finances improve , he saw his salary raised from U$330,000 to US $915,968 (more than the President of Harvard which has endowments 30 times the size of the Smithsonian) and received hundreds of thousands of dollars in reimbursements for personal expenses, revealed by Inspector General, A. Sprightley Ryan .These included chandelier cleaning and pool heating at his home, payments for a notional mortgage on his home (he owned it outright) chartered jet travel, his wife's trip to Cambodia, hotel rooms, luxury car service, catered staff meals and expensive gifts adn meals a deux with his wife at NY's swanky Cosmos Club . He also received US$1.15 million for making his house available for official functions.

4 days later, on Monday, Small.. er..resigned and Smithsonian Regent Patricia "Patty" Stonesifer, who is also co-chairwoman of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and like her husband an ex-Microsoft employee, will head the new Smithsonian governance committee.

Pfizer's Exubera inhaled insulin another dog for Pfizer

Exubera is an innovative inhaled insulin technology introduced by Pfizer which has been available for the last 6 months. An rDNA insulin isomerized on 3/4 micron glass microparticles, is inhaled using the rather large EXUBERA® Inhaler (pic ) delivery device which could easily be mistaken for Austin Powers' penis pump. You can find more about it at their website and see the video with the mind boggling requirements for cleaning the device.

The prinicipal advantage is said to be to overcome resistance to using hypodermic injections ( a condition medicalized as "needle-phobia") required by Type 1 Diabetics and seriously developed Type II Diabetes. Exubera provides only fast acting relief, say before a meal and not the long term relief which is increasingly the aim of treatment to reduce the need for injections. Before launch Pfizer were telling Wall Street that Exubera "could" ultimately bring in US$2Bn annual sales. "The general consensus among analysts is that Exubera is likely to be a blockbuster" Businessweek Feb 2006.

Sales are dire. Pfizer are said to have spent US$1 BN introducing the product (Pfizer won't disclose Exubera's development costs ) and worldwide sales are in the low US$millions. Merrill Lynch are telling investors there are les than 2 thousand continuing prescriptions nationwide. Sales are not helped by Dr. John Buse, president-elect of the American Diabetes Association, who participated in Exubera's trials who has said "There is no advantage to Exubera and there may be a safety risk. I see it as my job to talk people out of (using) it." He adds the unwelcome news for investors ..""I think Pfizer will wish they had never gotten into this. I doubt they'll regain their investment," This site exubera-risks.com provides a year long tale of problems with the drug.

Pfizer needs more blockbusters. Its best-selling drug ever, the anti cholesterol agent Lipitor, loses patent protection in 2010 and development of its successor drug (torcetrapib / atorvastatin, known as torcetrapib) was scrapped last year because of safety problems (the shares dropped 11% overnight) , also their blockbuster antidepressant Zoloft lost its patent protection.

Developed with Nektar (Pfizer paid $1.4 billion to acquire rights to the device in 2006) and produce the product in a brand new US$160 Mn. plant at Terre Haute.IN, where they have so far built up nearly $800 million in Exubera inventory this year and, will have over $1.5 billion in inventory by the end of this year. Exubera was introduced last September and no sales were reported by Pfizer. Insurers don't necessarily believe Pfizer have demonstrated Exubera's value or usefulness. Well Point the US's largest health insurer estimates that Exubera costs 11 percent more than one popular brand of injected insulin (Lilly) List price of US$122 to US $140 monthly)- currently they place it in the highest tier and require co-pay (where the client pasy part of the costs) , depending on the plan.. Patients need to buy a kit which includes the device but then also need to regularly purchase blister packs and release units, which help create the mist.

On top of the consumer resistance , doctors are also concerned about potential long-term side effects from constantly inhaling the powder into patients' lungs. Pfizer has two years of data showing the drug is safe, but doctors want to see results from longer-term and larger studies. Faced with the poor results so far Exubera will be relaunched to doctors in April it will be handed over to Pfizer's cardiovascular (CV) sales force supported by a massive Direct to Consumer (DTC)ad campaign.... which some in the industry see as a last desperate throw of the dice.

Eli Lilly, the world's largest supplier of injected insulin are also working on an inhaled insulin product but it won't be on the market until 2010 at the earliest. They still have to overcome the basic problem of any such device because if the inability of an inhaled insulin product to provide and exact dose. However Lilly's new long lasting diabetic drug Byetta (exenatide) -- which patients inject twice a day - has seen take up world wide and has not met resistance from needle-phobic patients.

Irrational Exubera

New drug technology has to produce a breakthrough in treatment outcomes.

1. Pfizer has to show that the switch from injected to inhaled insulin produces an improvement in compliance -- patients keeping to their dose regime leading to significant improvements in their health.

2. Pfizer have to produce evidence that any potential improvement in compliance will be sufficiently significant to overcome concerns about long term complications of lung damage.

3. Pfizer have to show value by reducing diabetes-related complications in use - not in studies.

4. Pfizer have,somehow to justify the extra costs over the proven methods of direct injection.

5. The device is clumsy, large and imprecise in use.... they are working on that and newer version is due real soon.

Whilst Exubera is available in the UK, uptake appears to be extremely modest. For people diagnosed Type II, Janet Ruhl a fellow and articulate patient has a useful website without ads !

Cesare Battisti - terrist in the wrong place , at the wrong time - as the French Right establish their hard man image

On March 25, 57 year-old Brigitte Mohnhaupt, 57, an important figure of Germany’s anticapitalist RAF (aka Baader-Meinhof) gang, reflecting a change in mood in Germany to the terrorists of the 1970's, was freed from Aichach prison in Bavaria.

On March 17th Giuseppe Pisanu the Italian Minister of the Interior said that a hard line should be taken against terrorists who had "scappato" - escaped. He is still smarting about the threat to his authority when last August the Union of Italian Islamic Communities (UCOII) published anti-Israel advertisement which was widely condemned for being anti-Semitic (comparing Israel's military actions to Nazi brutalities). The right-of-centre opposition have sharply criticised the government for "too soft" an approach to terrorism and the return of Battisti will make him look strong without actually having to do anything to salve the population's perceived security risk arising from a large Muslim population... including the Muslim Albanian gangsters who have taken over the trafficking trade and prostituiton and much of the drugs trade.

The next day , March 18th, Cesare Battisti was arrested in a cafe by French and Brazilian Plods on the Copecabana Beach, Buenos Aires , after arranging to meet an acquaintance , the result Prime Minister Prodi claimed was the result of co-operation of the police in Brazil-Italy and France. The person he was to meet was said to be a young woman from a French support committee who had some money for him - but she was under surveillance.

Not quite the story that police spokesman, Bruno Ramos gave "Brazilian police had been following him for several months after receiving information from Interpol in Paris and Rome,"

Whatver the Truth the Italian Justice Minister Clemente Mastella said it was a "brilliant operation"

This week Prodi has (co-incidentally ?) been in Brazil having a chat with Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva about a plan for Brazil's state-run oil company Petroleo Brasileiro SA and Italian energy company Eni SpA to develop biodiesel plants in Brazil and Africa to export the fuel to Italy.

On top of this Franco Frattini, former Italian foreign minister and now vice-president of the EU commission, has said "asymmetric and individual policies in Europe aren't the right strategy", to deal with immigration and has spoken in favour of Nicolas Sarkozy's tough view on a common European assimilation strategy and said that "all current immigration policies in Europe are unsuccessful, thus forcing us to change strategy."

Whis is Cesare Battisti ?

Wikipedia will give you a life. Now 53 he was active in the hrd left in Italy in the 1970's and was involved in theft and bank robberies and was imprisoned.

Later in Milan he helped found Armed Proletarians for Communism (Proletari Armati per il Comunismo - PAC), a far left Marxist group which supported armed struggle. Seerate from the centralist organisation of the Red Brigades (BR) which were in fact infiltrated if not run by the Italian State / Nato as part of Operation Gladio.

With only 60 members this small organisation and they are said to have killed Antonio Santoro, (6/6/78) a prison warder who had mistreated PAC prisoners. A jeweller , Pierluigi Torregiani (16/2/79). ...and almost simultaneously, a butcher, Lino Sabadin, a name in the neo-fascist Italian Social Movement (MSI) . They also claimed the death of DIGOS agent Andrea Campagna who had been involved in pursuing the PAC.

Cesare Battisti was arrested for several fairly minor crimes and jailed for 12 1/2 years February 26, 1979. He escaped to Mexico and then in 1990 went to live in France and claimed that the murder of Italian Prime Minister Aldo Moro by the Second Red Brigades lead by Mario Moretti caused him to give up the armed struggle.

The Miterrand Doctrine

On February 1st 1985 at the Palais des Sports in Rennes French Prime Minister Miterrand gave his word that leftist Italian activists whom had broken with their past and the spiral of violence would not be extradited to Italy, but excluded from this protection "active, actual, bloody terrorism". Later that year on April 21 at the 65th Congress of the Human Rights League (LDH), he declared that Italian refugees and former militants who had broken with their violent past would be protected from extradition to Italy.

Battisti lived quietly in paris and obtained some renown as a novelist ( including the semi-autobiographical , The Last Bullets) until at a meeting in Paris on September 1th 2002, between Italy's Minister of Justice Roberto Castelli (Northern League) and France's Minister Dominique Perben (RPR) the Italians sought Battisti's and others extradition. The first breach of the Miterrand policy was In 2002, when Paolo Persichetti, who had been a Red Brigades (BR) member who was then teaching sociology at university was extradited.

These requests continued and were continued largely to be ignored. Then on February 10, 2004, during Jacques Chirac's presidency (lucky not to be in prison himself) , the French government had Battisti arrested on Italy's request and planned to extradite him to Italy to face trial for murder.

However Battisti did a runner and that was why he was in Brazil when Plod caught up with him last week.

Why did they lift Battisti ?

1. One popular theory is that this arrest was handily timed to coincide with the French presidential elections and Leftwing commentators say presidential frontrunner Sarkozy had broken Mitterrand's commitment in order to boost his law and order credentials ahead of the April election.

Sarkozy has naturally rejected this criticism, saying that the French police had simply acted under an international arrest warrant issued after the Italian disappeared from France in 2004. A response to persistent demands from left and rightwing politicians in Italy who say Battisti is a terrorist and have pushed for his extradition for years.

le Monde has criticised this move and in Battiste's defence entitled “Straight for Battistes”, they opose the [prospect for jail for life because extradition would be “to submit it to a political judgment that no-one would justify” and would show the lurch by Europe to the Right.

Le Monde also published a tract from Jean-Marc Rouillan in 2005 "France : The return of the convicts" Rouillan was a leader of the Action Directe urban guerrilla group, sentenced to life imprisonment in 1987 for the murder of the CEO of Renault, Georges Besse, and a defence ministry official, General René Audran. He is now imprisoned at Lannemezan, in southwest France where he has been for the last 20 years. He is the author of ‘Lettre à Jules’ and ‘Chroniques carcérales’ and has just published a novel ‘La Part des loups’


His tract condemns the conditions in France’s prisons which he says have severely deteriorated in the past decade. The recommendations of parliamentary committees and well-meaning statements by charities have done nothing to slow, let alone halt, the downward trend. Recent government measures to tighten discipline are worsening an intolerable situation. The current policy is based on the beliefs that prison is the cure for all ills and that authority must be restored. ..... John Reid, Charles Clarke, David Blunkett acan all be heard cheering in the background.

2. Interpol have developed a unified, central database of stolen , forged travel documents over the last few years (The stolen and lost travel documents (SLTD) ) which now amounts to records covering at least 13.7 Mn documents notified by the 180 members.

They have developed a secure portal which can be accessed by member forces called MIND/FIND. These are two integrated solutions using either fixed or mobile integrated network databases, known as FIND and MIND. Both can integrate into the existing computer-assisted verification system in a country. In addition, MIND can be used in a country without any existing system.

This has been intensively used since early this year and has been very much in use at the Interpol Major Event Support Team (IMEST) which is on the ground in Port of Spain, Trinidad, in the Caribbean during the World Cup Cricket competition and they state over a score of fraudulent uses has been identified. The Caribbean region is the first in the world to use Interpol's MIND/FIND and SLTD database, which allows frontline border-entry officers to screen documents for those reported lost or stolen - and still Woolmer's killer(s) haven't been found.

In 2006, the nine host countries submitted 455 queries to the database with five hits. With the installation of MIND/FIND, law enforcement authorities have conducted more than 241,400 searches, with 44 hits, between 1 January and 21 March.Switzerland so far is the only country checking all incoming passports against the Interpol database.

As an extension of this Interpol claim that the identification of Battisti and his fraudulent documents (he is said to have had 2 forged French passport when captured) resulted from the use of the SLTD database.

Battisti was the subject of an Interpol Red Notice 20 years ago when he escaped from Italy which was the basis for the Interpol action. An Interpol Red Notice is not an international arrest warrant - and person should be, they warn - " considered innocent until proven guilty."

Chris Rowland Redux. Crystall Balls.

Snake oil salesman Chris Rowland (pic) of ECofin ex boutiquier financiers and money jugglers Dresdner Kleinwort Wasserstein told the recent Copenhagen conference organised by Point Carbon on Carbon Trading.....

“We’re facing a world of dear gas prices and CO2 prices of 40 to 50 euros,” said Ecofin’s Chris Rowland (see pic) , which seeing the market price currently hovers around 1 Euro is, shall we say a rifle optimistic.

..... well the traders at DKW were at their desks early today and clocking the pearls of Lord Patel's wisdom of July 27th last year "EU Emissions Trading Scheme - Hot Air Money Machine" when the said Chris Rowland's fundament was spouting much the same nonsense. These guys saw the ETS price drop 60% overnight and don't know why and they are still busy telling us all that this is the next "best thing".

Do these guys at DKW know something about the future career of Chris that they are not sharing with us... he was after all, so popular.

Oddly the The U.S. 3rd Brigade Combat Team / 3rd Infantry Division has been reported as being in Iraq, bound for Baghdad, do not appear, but Army Sgt. Adrian J. Lewis, 30, Mauldin, S.C.; is reported to have died Wednesday in Ramadi of wounds suffered from small-arms fire; assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 69th Armor Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, Fort Stewart, Ga. He was on his 3rd Combat tour to Iraq - the previous tours were each of one year.

Age old prophesy that Miliband will be Prime Minister

Just when the Cameroons seized power, Aangirfan (pic) in a wizard piece of political prophesy (Monday, October 24, 2005) said :

"The next leader of the Labour Party may be David Miliband, who is Jewish."

If you watched Peter Hitchens explain the Toff at the top of Tory Party tonight on Channel 4 TV read the Wikipedia entry on middle aged fogy Michael Gove who featured so much in the program .... and it seems, for months at every available opportunity on Newsnight.

The Board of Deputies of British Jews together with the Noah Project have launched a new green initiative with the support of the Environment Minister. The Big Green Jewish website was launched at a ceremony, timed to coincide with Tu B’Shevat or Jewish Arbor Day, in London by David Miliband MP, Secretary of State for the Environment 22nd February 2007.

She has to be applauded but the only practicable date is TODAY.

Spearmint Rhino . Sleazy lawyers, lap dancing and the VAT man - Taxing self abuse

Tax lawyers are lower than snake's belly and they managed in the High Court on Friday to prevent the notorious London based Spearmint Rhino Gentleman's Club dancing in your lap club from paying Value Added Tax (VAT) on it's dancers (?) earnings. David Milne QC representing Spearmint Rhino argued (succesfully) that the club should not pay because it was the dancer and not the club that provided the services.

This puts the burden for paying on the lap dancers to pay VAT, but if self employed they will have to earn £60,000 a year before they can be VAT registered traders.

Sleazoid Milne QC made the unlikely and comical comparison of lap dancers with concession shops at Airports. Buy a coffee, a camera or a condom at the last minute at Heathrow and you pay the shop not BAA.

Retailers paid for the "privilege of trading in the lucrative departure area" just as the dancers pay for the use of booths at the clubs. Which is total and utter bollocks, retailers at a BAA airport simply pay a rent, fixed in advance under a legal written contract, they maintainn paper records of all their receipts, prepare accounts....

The original ruling was made on the basis that the dancers were the agents of Spearmint Rhino because of the degree of control the club has over them through their Dance Performance Licences. (You Tube Video here) Adult stuff.

Plainly dancers in your lap are employees, and are also covered by HSE and other employment legislation (Sex, Equality etc., pension rights ).... unless they have detailed , agreed in advance, legal contracts, which is hardly the stock in trade of the nameless prickteasers .. (Court of Appeal judge Lord Justice Ward described the club's aim in an earlier case as "to tease and not to satisfy" - a man with some experience it seems.) more likely illegal Albanians and Bulgarians under the watchful eye of a pimp... although SR claim "To audition and work at Spearmint Rhino you must provide identification and a current proof of address in the UK." yeah , sure. They also add..

Dancers are considered Independent Contractors by both Spearmint Rhino and the Inland Revenue. As a Spearmint Rhino dancer, you will be liable for any and all taxation payments thereof.

SR claimed Dance Performance Licences requires the dancers to try to maximise sales and entertainment; pay damages to the club if they miss a session that they have booked and are subject to a code of conduct governing their contact with the clients.

Today under a screaming headline with the suggestive sub heading, "Lord Levy said 'Not now Tony' and went......."

Mr and Mrs Coventry, like many people with lots of money and a keen social conscience were happy to pay £1,000 for the tickets to a New Labour fund raiser at the London Hilton when asked by Jane Hogarth, who claimed she was head of "public relations and fundraising" (?) for the Party. He is a blameless former travel agent from the Wirral, she a beautiful, talented and very hardworking film actress.

They are also - not that they brag about it, NOT in the search for a peerage because they are the Count and Countess of Rozel.

"Lord Levy introduced us to Mr Blair. We talked about his vision for the future and he praised America's strong leadership." explained Courtney Coventry.(see pic)

The discussion then turned to children. He said he wished he could spend more time with his. Courtney, evidently at ease having found a subject of common interest sympathised with Tony, "I said it must be hard being PM and raising children."

Canadian, US fighters conduct joint training 'ooop North

The North American Aerospace Defence Command - NORAD (who performed so well on 9/11 in defending the nation - you know "Deter - Detect - Defend") conduct regular training with its regional support units/ This enables them to maintain and validate procedures and readiness levels for response in emergency situations. NORAD airborne early warning assets and air-to-air refuelling tankers play important roles in safe-guarding the sovereignty of U.S. and Canadian airspace. (It says here) The commander of NORAD is responsible for land, aerospace and sea defenses of the United States. He commands United States forces that operate within the United States in support of civil authorities.

Canadian and US aircraft supporting NORAD are to conduct joint training in the Canadian North early next week. They will practice conducting joint long-range detection missions in the region of Whitehorse, Yukon. These missions test the ability of NORAD that enable detection and identification of unknown aircraft.

Maj.-Gen. Charlie Bouchard, Commander of 1 Canadian Air Division/Canadian NORAD HQ is really excited at the prospect ..." As a bi-national command, we train to ensure the defence of North America” he said when asked.

These war games will involve lengthy preparation (check the fuel, battery, kick the tyres) of Canadian CF-18 Hornets and a CC-130T Hercules air-to-air refuelling tanker, US F-15 Eagles, a KC-135 refuelling tanker (only one) , and an Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS) aircraft.

Let's hope it isn't one of those pesky exercises that got in the fucking way when North America was really under threat. Check, what is VP Cheney doing next week ? If he's in hospital again democracy will be safe for a bit longer.

Air Force Gen. Victor E. Renuart Jr. (pic) became the 20th commander of NORAD Friday, taking over from Adm. Timothy J. Keating, who is scheduled to assume command of U.S. Pacific Command March 26 in Hawaii. Secretary of Defense Robert Gates awarded Keating the Defense Distinguished Service Medal before presiding over the USNORTHCOM change of command at Petersen Air Force Base, Colo. Renuart had been appointed to defence Secretary Gates's staff as a senior military assistant in August -Pic is of 3 war criminals who threaten Homeland Security March 23rd 2003 - 2 down, only one to go.

Canadian Chief of Defense Staff Gen. Rick Hillier awarded Keating the Canadian Meritorious Service Cross and said ...

"No two sovereign nations in the world, except for Canada and the United States, have such a unique command structure,.... has enhanced the security of both our countries."

During Keating's tenure, NORAD and USNORTHCOM began the process of integrating into a single command center "to serve two nations better," Hillier said. "We fully support that ... and our shoulder is behind anything that gives us efficacy and efficiency whilst continuing to give us a powerful and positive effect."

"We consider our shared and peaceful border a perfect metaphor for the relationship of two distinct yet joined partners," he said, adding that NORAD and USNORTHCOM share an "ever-progressive" and "continually evolving" relationship with Mexico. The collaboration ... with both these nations really does reinforce the security of our homeland,"

Gen. Renuart told the Senate Senate Armed Services Committee on March 9th at his confirmation hearing ...

"If confirmed, I’ll join the men and women of NORAD and NORTHCOM in dedicating ourselves to the defense of the homeland,” he said. “We’ll work closely with our federal and state partners, our interagency partners, the National Guard, and the countries of Canada and Mexico, with whom we maintain a close relationship.”

General Renuart has strong interest and Background in the use of UAV's for strategic reconnaissance"UAV's such as Predator and Global Hawk" he says, "have become such an important tool for our decision makers -- operational battlefield decision makers and strategic decision makers"

Interpol issued a note about him with 2 Pakistani addresses in Karachi and hints at his 'possible'hideout at NU 37, 30th Street, Defence Housing Authority. The second one is mentioned as White House, near Saudi Mosque, Clifton Road.

Interpol now recognises Dawood as part of the worldwide terror syndicate of Osama bin Laden whose Al-Qaida is lead member of the 17-member World Jihad Council.

The note from Interpol, was sent on April 4th 2006 to all 184-member countries asking them to freeze the D-company CEO's assets, place a travel ban and arms embargo as "Dawood is the subject of UN's anti-terrorism sanctions."

False Passports / World Cup / Interpol

Interpol Law enforcement officers in the Caribbean have identified scores of stolen and lost travel documents since technical solutions developed by Interpol were deployed at airports and seaports in the nine host countries of the Cricket World Cup. (They have a database of 12 million recorded stolen travel documents that were reported lost in the last 3 years)

One hit occurred on 16 March at Barbados Intl. airport , immigration officers using the MIND / FIND software to search Interpol’s database identified a Nigerian man who claimed to have been naturalized in Venezuela was traveling on a stolen Venezuelan passport.The man was arrested upon landing in Guyana. His intention was to travel on to Brazil and Venezuela.

Interpol worked with the host countries – Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Grenada, Guyana, Jamaica, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and Grenadines and Trinidad and Tobago – to expedite the installation of MIND/FIND before the tournament. The border-protection system currently in place is among the most advanced in the world.

An Interpol Major Event Support Team (IMEST) is on the ground in Port of Spain, Trinidad, to assist officers from host countries’ NCBs and international liaison officers at the Regional Intelligence Fusion Center.
