Airbus A380 preparations at Dulles Airport nearly complete
Crawford Murphy & Tillett, Consulting engineers MT has been providing ongoing airfield development and rehabilitation services at Dulles International Airport since 1982.. CMT was recently selected to complete a comprehensive analysis of the airfield’s ability to accommodate the very large Airbus A380 aircraft, which is slated for commercial operation by at least three carriers at Dulles.
With its large wingspan (50 feet wider than a 747 - 40% heavier take off weight) ) , the A380 falls into the FAA’s Design Group (DG) VI category. While many aspects of the airfield configuration meet DG VI criteria, not all components are in full compliance. The study evaluated geometry, markings, lighting, and pavement strength for compliance with DG VI criteria.
In addition, construction phasing, jet blast, and ground movement impacts were summarized. The study will allow Metro Washington Airports Authority personnel to plan and prioritize necessary changes to the airfield facilities and infrastructure. Estimated costs for various modification scenarios were provided.
There will be proving flights at Dulles late in the year if you want to see the beast which will change air travel for decades - even if Boeing do ever get round to super sizinf the Dreamliner.
Los Angeles International Airport, New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport and Chicago's O'Hare International Airport are having to spend a lot of money to meet the requirments. Toronto is ready and Montreal soon will be for direct Paris - Montreal flights.
