Speak with Forked Tongue

It was a line of Adrian Henri's ,

"Of course I love you he said
His tongue in her cheek"

... and the response of the dumb to the post about the well spoofed Colorado practice of thumb whittling that sent me down the curiously dark alleyways of the body modification underworld.

Apparently you can quite readily have your tongue slit - the tongue is divided from the tip toward the back of the tongue for about 3 to 5 cm (1-2 inches), according to patient preference. Dr. Lawrence Busino in Albany NY has apparently done more than any other doctor in North America

It's not a practice universally admired ,or approved even. Illinois state Rep.David Miller , a lawyer and a dentist, introduced a bill requiring tongue-splitting to be performed only for medical reasons and only by a doctor or dentist.(passed unanimously in the Illinois House and Senate).

Last summer, state lawmakers in Michigan narrowly defeated a similar bill. "Ultimately, it came down to an individual rights issue," says Tom Kochheiser, a spokesman for the Michigan Dental Association, which supported but did not introduce that state's unsuccessful measure. He says the association has no plans to pursue the issue further.

However the armed forces in the US have outlawed the practice, at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base in North Carolina one airman had the tissue in his split tongue reopened and sewn back together in February to avoid being kicked out of the service.

Adrian loved poetry readings, especially to young people . Here he would mingle, especially with the pretty girls, and sell his books .. a memorable occasion when someone arrived proffering a dog eared and obviously well read copy of his "Wish You Were Here" .. "Ah ! .... an unsigned copy of my poems ..a bibliographical rarity"

Known principally as a poet he was an exceptionally talented painter... it is unlikely he would have had his tongue slit, despite the undoubted erotic possibilities it might afford.
