Inspector Neil Munro, 43, of Dorset Police bought a ticket and boarded the Brittany Ferries ship alone late last night in Poole, Dorset which set sail at 11.45 pm.
His body was found just down the coast on a beach bordering Poole harbour at 8.30am.
