Inspector Neil Munro, 43, of Dorset Police bought a ticket and boarded the Brittany Ferries ship alone late last night in Poole, Dorset which set sail at 11.45 pm.

His body was found just down the coast on a beach bordering Poole harbour at 8.30am.

The last time he hit the headlines was a few days earlier on March 5th when he broke up a student party in Winton, Bournemouth of a feckless student who advertised their party on Bebo - and 200 turned up.
