WASHINGTON (CNN) --- President George Bush said Tuesday he welcomes a Justice Department investigation into who revealed the classified identity of a CIA operative.

"If there's a leak out of my administration, I want to know who it is," Bush told reporters at an impromptu news conference during a fund-raising stop in Chicago, Illinois. "If the person has violated law, that person will be taken care of."

"Scooter" has ...er... been well taken care of, the commutation of his sentence is but the first step to his pardon.

But then Daddy did pardon Caspar Weinberger ( a "true patriot" he called him when doing so) who was indicted for lying to the special prosecutor investigating the Iran/Contra affair in December 1992 just before he left office.

Daddy also pardoned 5 others - despite the fact that they had pleaded guilty or had been indicted or convicted in connection with the Iran-Contra arms-for-hostages investigation. Step forward Elliott Abrams, a former assistant secretary of state for Inter-American affairs; former National Security Adviser Robert McFarlane, and Duane Clarridge, Alan Fiers, and Clair George, all former employees of the Central Intelligence Agency.

At the time the incoming President at a news conference in Little Rock, Arkansas, later in the day, was asked about the pardons, he said he did'nt have all the details on the matter and would withhold comment until he had had a chance to study the president's statement and related information.

However, Clinton said he was concerned...

"by any action which sends a signal that, if you work for the government,
you're above the law, or that not telling the truth to Congress under oath is
somehow less serious than not telling the truth to some other body under oath."

" Martin Plant, professor of addiction studies at the University of the West of England, in Bristol, a leading authority on alcohol abuse, said yesterday that academics and health professionals were increasingly concerned at the culture department's stand.

He cited the department's role in the appointment of Jean Coussins, chief executive of the Portman Group - an organisation directly funded by the liquor industry to promote "responsible drinking" - to the Alcohol Education and Research Council, a quango. "We were appalled and horrified by this," he said.

The department said last night that, as part of its statute, the research council had to include industry representatives.

"We did not get a nomination from the industry so Jean Coussins was appointed. She is not part of the industry, but head of a body which oversees the industry."

Ms Coussins acknowledged objections to her appointment had been made in the specialist magazine, Addiction. "The important point is that the Portman Group does not sit on the council, an individual called Jean Coussins does," she said." Yeah, Yeah ... "We did not get a nomination from the industry."

She is also a member of the Better Regulation Commission announced by the Gubment in the 2005 Budget to, " provide independent advice to government, from business and other external stakeholders, about new regulatory proposals and about the Government's overall regulatory performance."
