German terrorist may be released soon

In President Bush's War on Terror, many are ignorant of, or have forgotten that terrorism is not new in Europe, from Basque ETA activists , in Ireland, the IRA and and UVF and their continuing splinter groups and in germany the Baader - Meinhof Gang and the Red Army Faction (Rote Armee Fraktion) who killed over 30 people.

One of their most determined German activists may soon be released.

Brigitte Mohnhaupt (pic) was first arrested on 9th June 1972 in Berlin in connection with the Red Army Faction and sentenced to prison for involvement with a criminal organisation. She was released from prison on 8 February 1977, and immediately went back underground and continued her work with the RAF.

On the 15th September 1981 Mohnhaupt took part in an assassination attempt on US General Frederick Kroesen using an RPG-7 anti-tank rocket. Kroesen survived but was badly injured.

On 11 November 1982 she was arrested along with Adelheid Schulz, attempting to enter an RAF arms cache in woods near Frankfurt which had been staked out by GSG9 operatives who had infiltrated their cell. She was subsequently charged with involvement in the murder on 30 July 1977 of banker Jürgen Ponto, chairman of the Dresdner Bank board of directors in Oberursel, Taunus ,and also involvement in the kidnappijng and subsequent murder of ex Nazi and German employers representative Hanns Martin Schleyer. She was found guilty and sentenced to 5 life sentences and has since spent most of her time in Aichach prison in Bavaria.

On 21st February last year she applied for early release in the regional court in Stuttgart and was rejected and it was determined that the minimum sentence required was 24 years which the Federal prosecutor Klaus Pflieger demanded / requested - meaning the earliest possible release date would be 26 March,2007.

She is now 57 and has re-applied for release and the Bavarian Ministry of Justice are expected to report by the end of February on her case. Press coment this week in Stren, Der Zeit suggets that her release is expected.

Andrea Martina Klump (50) was the last RAF member to be imprisoned. She was the girlfriend of Horst Ludwig Meyer and with him attempted to bomb a Spanish disco in Rota in 1984 which was often frequented by US servicemen however the attempt fell through. She was also cnsidered to be involved with the murder of banker Alfred Herrhausen in 1989 but nothing was ever proved.

With Meyer on December 23, 1991 an attempt was made with a 25KG bomb of military explosives to bomb a bus on the way to Budapest airport with 33 people on board including 29 Soviet Jewish emigrants with a car bomb.

The bomb exploded prematurely and nobody was killed but several were injured. They evaded Police until September 15, 1999 when they were approached by the police in Vienna , Meyer was shot and Klump who survived, was extradited to Germany .

She confessed to the attempted Spanish Disco bombing (German law allows trial for offences outside German territory) and was sentenced in May 2001 to 9 years but charges of involvement in a terrorist organisation, were dropped.

Klump partially confessed to the 1991 Hungary bombing, accepting prior knowledge but not direct involvement - DNA evidence of Klump's stay in Budapest around the time of the bombing linked her to it and on September 28th 2004 Klump was sentenced by a High Court in Stuttgart to a further 12 years in prison.

German terrists released and Germans kidnapped in Iraq - was one a spy ?

As expected (see Lord Patel Jan 19th )the Stuttgart State Court has announced this morning the release of Brigitte Mohnhaupt, 57, on 5 years probation on March 27. One of the last jailed members of the Baader-Meinhof gang, she received 5 life sentences.

In anticipation, no doubt of widespread public objections, the court was anxious to point out that this was not a pardon and was a decision that is based on the specific legal consideration that no security risk exists.

President Horst Koehler is also considering a pardon for Mohnhaupt’s former RAF (Rote Army Fraktion) colleague Christian Klar, (pics from74 - he looks a litle like Matthew Parris, and today) who has also spent the past 24 years behind bars.

Their jailed colleagues Birgit Hogefeld (L) and E H Haule (R) remain in prison.

German victims of Terrorism in Iraq Today

The Berliner Morgenpost reported this weekend that two Germans (so far un-named) had been kidnapped in Baghdad. Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier says they were kidnapped last Tuesday and officials in Berlin as well as the German embassy in Baghdad have been working "hyperactively" on the problem.

On November 25th 2005 the Bavarian archaeologist Susanne Osthoff (45) was taken hostage with her driver at the end of 2005 - she had been working in Iraq since 1991 and was a convert to Islam and had been married to an Iraqi. An armed group kidnapped 2 engineers from Leipzig, Thomas Nitzschke and René Bräunlich, in January 2006. All 3 victims of terrorism three were eventually freed unharmed, but in Osthoff's case, who was returned after 3 weeks on December 18th 2005, it is alleged that Angela Merkel's German government paid a ransom of millions of euros and also traded her for a convicted terrorist named as Mohammed Ali Hamad. a Hezbollah militant serving a sentence for killing U.S. Navy diver Robert Dean Stethemin on a hijacked TWA jetliner in 1985 - he was apparently quietly shipped from Germany back to his native Lebanon after serving only 19 years of his life sentence.

The State government in North Rhine Westphalia, where he was being held, not the federal Government authorised his release because he had "had qualified for parole ".

There also reports that she worked for the German intelligence service, the Bundesnachrichtendienst (BND) , and had helped arrange a meeting with a top member of the terrorist organization al-Qaida, possibly Abu Mussab al-Zarqawi and had access to safe house run by BND.

The German magazine Focus also claimed that Osthoff was carrying several thousand dollars on her when released, that formed part of the ransom which were traceable from their numbers.(Reuters)

About 100 Germans now live in Iraq, according to the Ministry, including aid workers, employees of German security firms, and a number of German-Iraqis -- people with German passports who returned to Iraq after the fall of Saddam Hussein.

UPDATE "Where are they now ?" No. 253 Susanne Osthoff

Curious, how picking over an old (?) story reveals some interesting nuggets. A video was released of the smart and savvy bone digger Susanna Osthoff when she was in captivity - see top of story. This was a short while after the SAS duo was picked up in Basra (Sept 18th 2005) that General Mad Bloody Sunday Bloody Sunday "Mike" Jackson was so anxious to recover.

On her return to Germany she appeared on a a German TV network ZNF in arab dress , and was highly confused and gave a cock and bull story of the abduction etc., which "official" sources said was due to "exhaustion"m "confusion".

Then some folks started comparing the videos about Nick Berg and the possibility that they were concocted - plastic chair the same as Abu Ghraib (and let's face it 50 Mn patios around the Mediterranean) , captors had trainers, unusual with Islamofascistjihadist heavy men etc., etc., - which brings to mind the DVD's allegedly found in the flat of Mr Hussein who decamped from the scene of 21/7 bombings via Eurostar to Italy when everyone was looking for him - but actually listening in to his mobile - wunnerful thing modern technology. DVD's which were shown to the jurors of the 21/7 bombers today (missing the actual beheadings out - (of which there wasn't actually one in the Berg video published)).

So here for those interested is the picture of these suspiciously large men holding Susanne Osthoff, no flags, no jihadist slogans , no insignia, no headbands. Just what was happening when Susanne Osthoff was "kidnapped" ?

Stadtguerilla - Red Army Faction - Stasi - Stockwell ?

Traudl Herrhausen, is the widow of Alfred Herrhausen. He was was the chairman of the Deutsche Bank , West Germany's largest, and a major member of the German business elite who had driven Germany's post war economic success - whilst East Germany declined.

She has maintained a public silence about his violent assassination on November 30th 1989.

His death was the result of plot executed with flawlessl military precision. A sack of armour piercing explosive on a parked bicycle was triggered remotely by an infra red beam as the first of the 3 car convoy passed. An observer then activated the device.

Construction workers had previously carefully laid the wire connecting the bomb and it's trigger under the pavement in the days preceding this extraordinarily well planned event - on a route he rarely used.

His death (it was said) represented a remarkable 3rd generation of the Red Army Faction utilising new techniques and technology.

With the wall down, known Red Army cadres who had been previously been granted political asylum in East Germany were rounded up. Beginning in about 1980, the Stasi granted refuge to 10 members of the Red Army Faction in East Germany and gave them assumed identities.

They all had solid alibis.

Sixteen months after Mr. Herrhausen's murder, the Red Army Faction claimed its last victim, killing Detlev Karsten Rohwedder, the head of the Treuhandanstalt, the powerful trust that controlled most state-owned assets in the former East Germany and was overseeing their privatization. Mr. Rohwedder was killed n 1st April 1990 by a remarkably skilled sniper while he was standing by the window of his house in Düsseldorf. A hitherto unknown modus operandi of the RAF who had neither the skill, experience or the required equipment (see pic of 3 shots determined the following night by using lasers to be 63 metres away - "Ein mörderisches Meisterstück" said a Bundeskriminalamt officer) . Der RAF ist es wieder einmal gelungen, eine Lücke im Sicherheitssystem zu entdecken - und sie auszunutzen. (cross ref IRA ownership of Barratt Sniper rifles usually handed out only by CIA)

In July 1991, German prosecutors claimed a possible breakthrough when an informant claimed he had allowed two members of the Red Army Faction to stay at his home near the Herrhausen residence. Prosecutors followed that trail 13 years before dropping charges in 2004.

In November 1989, as East Germany disintegrated, groups of citizens forced their way into Stasi installations, seizing control. In Wartin, a small village near the Polish Border a local church minister led a group of demonstrators to the main entrance of the Stasi base. The base closed.

This base was, we now the home to was home to the Stasi's AGM/S -- "Minister Working Group/Special Operations." It got its name because it reported to Mr. Erich Mielke, the minister who headed the Stasi for almost all of East Germany's 40-year history.

As Stasi records (the ones that have survived wholesale incineration)become publicly available it is becoming apparent that there were connections between the RAF and Stasi.

A year after the Red Army Faction's first generation collapsed in 1972, an internal Wartin report said cooperation with terrorists is possible if the individuals could be trusted to maintain secrecy and obey orders. Initial contacts, however, may not have taken place until later in the decade. Disillusionment gripped many of the terrorists living on the lam, according to court records citing witness statements by accused terrorists.

On 15th September 1981, Red Army Faction terrorists had attempted to kill U.S. Gen. Frederick James Kroesen in Heidelberg. They shot a bazooka at his car. About the same time, members of the same Red Army Faction team visited East Germany, where they were asked by the Stasi to shoot a bazooka at a car containing a dog. The dog died, according to court records.

Brigid Mohnhaupt took part in the assassination attempt on US General Frederick James Kroesen using an RPG-7 anti-tank rocket.

(Off the A57 at Kaast near Cologne there are two new streets named Detlev-Karsten-Rohwedder-Str. and Hans Martin Schleyer Strasse)

She was found guilty and sentenced to 5 life sentences and has since spent most of her time in Aichach prison in Bavaria.

She was released on February 12th 2007

In Wartin, officials wrote up a detailed description of the Red Army Faction members' re-enactment of the Kroesen attack. "It is important to collect all accessible information about the terrorist scene in imperialist countries, to study and analyze their equipment, methods and tactics, so we can do it ourselves," a senior Wartin official wrote in February 1982, according to the report.

West German police discovered two buried caches of Red Army Faction weapons in 1982 and documents buried in German forests. Three terrorists, including Red Army Faction leader Christian Klar, were arrested when they approached the sites. The arms dumps were buried in locations easy to find at night, a tactic used by Wartin's own agents to store operational equipment in West Germany, according to an investigator who viewed the troves and Stasi records. (In May this year Germany's President Horst Köhler unexpectedly announced that he has refused clemency to the convicted RAF terrorists Christian Klar and Birgit Hogefeld.)

That same year, a Wartin official described the staged bombing of a moving vehicle. According to the report, several Stasi officers shed "tears of joy" when electronic sensors detected the approaching car and ignited the detonator.

Werner Grossmann, a former three-star Stasi General, former head of foreign intelligence operations, (and still alive) says the AGM/S was responsible for planning attacks in West Germany, but was dissolved "because it didn't produce results." Mr. Grossmann assumed control of part of the AGM/S after most of the unit was dissolved.

The Red Army Faction today is increasingly viewed by the German public as part of the social upheaval that plagued West Germany in the 1970s and 1980s. More than a quarter of Germans consider former Red Army Faction members to have been misguided idealists. Many think that investigations should be closed for good in the coming decade when the current group of Red Army Faction prisoners finish serving their prison sentences.

Of course.

You might like also to consider the case of the Bundesnachrichtendienst (BND) , and the the kidnapping on November 25th 2005 the Bavarian archaeologist Susanne Osthoff (45) in Iraq and the surprising release of the Bavarian bonedigger after 3 weeks on December 18th 2005.

Pic Erich Mielke, Erich Honecker, Walter Ulbricht in 1970 - in the apparent harmony these guys who lived in the Wandlitz, the Berlin suburb with its grand 23 single family houses where the Politburo lived - Mileke had his spies even there, gardeners, cooks - like J Edgar Hoover he trusted no-one and had files on all.

RAF terrorist Christian Klar released - only one Baader Meinhof gang member still in jail

A very fit and healthy looking former Red Army Faction (RAF) terrorist 56 year old Christian Klar has been released after 26 years in prison - his granting of parole was announced on November 24th. . He left the Bruchsal prison last Friday says his lawyer and this was confirmed yesterday by The Ministry of Justice in Baden-Wuerttemberg .

Klar was a key accomplice of Brigitte Mohnhaupt, who was released in March 2007 after serving 24 years in jail for murdering prominent establishment figures, including those of West German chief federal prosecutor Siegfried Buback, Dresdner Bank head Juergen Ponto and Hanns-Martin Schleyer, the head of the country's industry federation. He was convicted in 1985 of nine murders and 11 counts of attempted murder - he had been in prison since 1982.

At the time Klar had appealed for clemency to the German President Horst Köhler. However he also sent a message to the Rosa Luxemburg Conference of left-wing groups in January, declaring that the time had come to "complete the defeat of the plans of capitalism and to open the door to another future." Monday, May 07, 2007 Clemency for RAF terrorists refused by German President

At the time Günther Beckstein, the conservative interior minister of Bavaria, warned Köhler not to grant clemency. A noted Protstant he told the mass-circulation newspaper Bild: "The aggressive tone and the ideological stubbornness show that this is an incorrigible terrorist criminal." Beckstein went on to become President of Bavaria but in the September elections the CSU had a massive setback after 4 decades in power and he lost his position - to be followed by Horst Seehofer.

The leader of the liberal Free Democrats party, Guido Westerwelle, took a similar line. "Klar is no reformed criminal," he said. "He remains a convicted serial killer and I strictly oppose granting him clemency."

Now only one former member of the RAF, Birgit Hogefeld, 52, remains in prison. She was arrested in 1993 and in November 1996 she was given three life sentences and is currently in a Frankfurt detention centre.

In 2008 Federal president Köhler denied her clemency request - she must serve at least another three years before she might be considered eligible for parole because of the "severity of the crimes."

See Monday, October 01, 2007 Stadtguerilla - Red Army Faction - Stasi - Stockwell ?

There is an intersting on-line archive of RAF documents, statements etc here this includes items from the Struggle Against World Imperialism Organization, a Palestinian group which hijacked a Lufthansa airliner in 1977 in support of the RAF, at the time of the Schleyer kidnapping.

Worth reading is "The Urban Guerrilla Is History..." The Final Communiqué From The Red Army Faction (RAF)

Curiously Jack Prescott, now 64 – a founder member of the Angry Brigade, Britain’s only home-grown urban terrorist group (not counting Gordon's 75% home brew extreme neo-Fascist fundamentalist Muslim terrists) , which carried out 25 attacks on Government buildings (they bombed of the Dept. of Employment and Productivity on the day of a large demonstration against the Industrial Relations Bill) , embassies and corporations cropped up in the UK news as the husband of Lisa Christensen, director of children’s services in Norfolk.

Clemency for RAF terrorists refused by German President

Germany's President Horst Köhler unexpectedly announced today that he has refused clemency to the convicted RAF terrorists Christian Klar and Birgit Hogefeld.

Klar, now 54, has been in prison for 24 years and is 2 years away from being eligible for parole and was turned down by Köhler's predecesor Johannes Rau as part of his review he met Klar and as a consequence was met with furious critcism by conservative politicians.

In February this year Klar sent a provocative anti-capitalist statement to a conference of far-left groups which was picked up by a demonstration that he showed no remorse, nor had he changed his radical political views.

Hogefeld received a life sentence in 1996 for the murder of an American soldier and a bomb attack on a United States airbase in 1985. She will not be eligible for parole until 2011 at the earliest.

The Christian Social Union, the conservative Bavarian sister party to German Chancellor Angela Merkel's Christian Democratic Union, attacked Köhler over the weekend, saying they would not support him if he were to stand again for president in 2009, should he grant Klar clemency.

This controversy follows the release by Klar in March this year of RAF member Brigitte Mohnhaupt before her sentence expired.(See post by Lord Patel 12/2/07)

Cesare Battisti - terrist in the wrong place , at the wrong time - as the French Right establish their hard man image

On March 25, 57 year-old Brigitte Mohnhaupt, 57, an important figure of Germany’s anticapitalist RAF (aka Baader-Meinhof) gang, reflecting a change in mood in Germany to the terrorists of the 1970's, was freed from Aichach prison in Bavaria.

On March 17th Giuseppe Pisanu the Italian Minister of the Interior said that a hard line should be taken against terrorists who had "scappato" - escaped. He is still smarting about the threat to his authority when last August the Union of Italian Islamic Communities (UCOII) published anti-Israel advertisement which was widely condemned for being anti-Semitic (comparing Israel's military actions to Nazi brutalities). The right-of-centre opposition have sharply criticised the government for "too soft" an approach to terrorism and the return of Battisti will make him look strong without actually having to do anything to salve the population's perceived security risk arising from a large Muslim population... including the Muslim Albanian gangsters who have taken over the trafficking trade and prostituiton and much of the drugs trade.

The next day , March 18th, Cesare Battisti was arrested in a cafe by French and Brazilian Plods on the Copecabana Beach, Buenos Aires , after arranging to meet an acquaintance , the result Prime Minister Prodi claimed was the result of co-operation of the police in Brazil-Italy and France. The person he was to meet was said to be a young woman from a French support committee who had some money for him - but she was under surveillance.

Not quite the story that police spokesman, Bruno Ramos gave "Brazilian police had been following him for several months after receiving information from Interpol in Paris and Rome,"

Whatver the Truth the Italian Justice Minister Clemente Mastella said it was a "brilliant operation"

This week Prodi has (co-incidentally ?) been in Brazil having a chat with Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva about a plan for Brazil's state-run oil company Petroleo Brasileiro SA and Italian energy company Eni SpA to develop biodiesel plants in Brazil and Africa to export the fuel to Italy.

On top of this Franco Frattini, former Italian foreign minister and now vice-president of the EU commission, has said "asymmetric and individual policies in Europe aren't the right strategy", to deal with immigration and has spoken in favour of Nicolas Sarkozy's tough view on a common European assimilation strategy and said that "all current immigration policies in Europe are unsuccessful, thus forcing us to change strategy."

Whis is Cesare Battisti ?

Wikipedia will give you a life. Now 53 he was active in the hrd left in Italy in the 1970's and was involved in theft and bank robberies and was imprisoned.

Later in Milan he helped found Armed Proletarians for Communism (Proletari Armati per il Comunismo - PAC), a far left Marxist group which supported armed struggle. Seerate from the centralist organisation of the Red Brigades (BR) which were in fact infiltrated if not run by the Italian State / Nato as part of Operation Gladio.

With only 60 members this small organisation and they are said to have killed Antonio Santoro, (6/6/78) a prison warder who had mistreated PAC prisoners. A jeweller , Pierluigi Torregiani (16/2/79). ...and almost simultaneously, a butcher, Lino Sabadin, a name in the neo-fascist Italian Social Movement (MSI) . They also claimed the death of DIGOS agent Andrea Campagna who had been involved in pursuing the PAC.

Cesare Battisti was arrested for several fairly minor crimes and jailed for 12 1/2 years February 26, 1979. He escaped to Mexico and then in 1990 went to live in France and claimed that the murder of Italian Prime Minister Aldo Moro by the Second Red Brigades lead by Mario Moretti caused him to give up the armed struggle.

The Miterrand Doctrine

On February 1st 1985 at the Palais des Sports in Rennes French Prime Minister Miterrand gave his word that leftist Italian activists whom had broken with their past and the spiral of violence would not be extradited to Italy, but excluded from this protection "active, actual, bloody terrorism". Later that year on April 21 at the 65th Congress of the Human Rights League (LDH), he declared that Italian refugees and former militants who had broken with their violent past would be protected from extradition to Italy.

Battisti lived quietly in paris and obtained some renown as a novelist ( including the semi-autobiographical , The Last Bullets) until at a meeting in Paris on September 1th 2002, between Italy's Minister of Justice Roberto Castelli (Northern League) and France's Minister Dominique Perben (RPR) the Italians sought Battisti's and others extradition. The first breach of the Miterrand policy was In 2002, when Paolo Persichetti, who had been a Red Brigades (BR) member who was then teaching sociology at university was extradited.

These requests continued and were continued largely to be ignored. Then on February 10, 2004, during Jacques Chirac's presidency (lucky not to be in prison himself) , the French government had Battisti arrested on Italy's request and planned to extradite him to Italy to face trial for murder.

However Battisti did a runner and that was why he was in Brazil when Plod caught up with him last week.

Why did they lift Battisti ?

1. One popular theory is that this arrest was handily timed to coincide with the French presidential elections and Leftwing commentators say presidential frontrunner Sarkozy had broken Mitterrand's commitment in order to boost his law and order credentials ahead of the April election.

Sarkozy has naturally rejected this criticism, saying that the French police had simply acted under an international arrest warrant issued after the Italian disappeared from France in 2004. A response to persistent demands from left and rightwing politicians in Italy who say Battisti is a terrorist and have pushed for his extradition for years.

le Monde has criticised this move and in Battiste's defence entitled “Straight for Battistes”, they opose the [prospect for jail for life because extradition would be “to submit it to a political judgment that no-one would justify” and would show the lurch by Europe to the Right.

Le Monde also published a tract from Jean-Marc Rouillan in 2005 "France : The return of the convicts" Rouillan was a leader of the Action Directe urban guerrilla group, sentenced to life imprisonment in 1987 for the murder of the CEO of Renault, Georges Besse, and a defence ministry official, General René Audran. He is now imprisoned at Lannemezan, in southwest France where he has been for the last 20 years. He is the author of ‘Lettre à Jules’ and ‘Chroniques carcérales’ and has just published a novel ‘La Part des loups

His tract condemns the conditions in France’s prisons which he says have severely deteriorated in the past decade. The recommendations of parliamentary committees and well-meaning statements by charities have done nothing to slow, let alone halt, the downward trend. Recent government measures to tighten discipline are worsening an intolerable situation. The current policy is based on the beliefs that prison is the cure for all ills and that authority must be restored. ..... John Reid, Charles Clarke, David Blunkett acan all be heard cheering in the background.

2. Interpol have developed a unified, central database of stolen , forged travel documents over the last few years (The stolen and lost travel documents (SLTD) ) which now amounts to records covering at least 13.7 Mn documents notified by the 180 members.

They have developed a secure portal which can be accessed by member forces called MIND/FIND. These are two integrated solutions using either fixed or mobile integrated network databases, known as FIND and MIND. Both can integrate into the existing computer-assisted verification system in a country. In addition, MIND can be used in a country without any existing system.

This has been intensively used since early this year and has been very much in use at the Interpol Major Event Support Team (IMEST) which is on the ground in Port of Spain, Trinidad, in the Caribbean during the World Cup Cricket competition and they state over a score of fraudulent uses has been identified. The Caribbean region is the first in the world to use Interpol's MIND/FIND and SLTD database, which allows frontline border-entry officers to screen documents for those reported lost or stolen - and still Woolmer's killer(s) haven't been found.

In 2006, the nine host countries submitted 455 queries to the database with five hits. With the installation of MIND/FIND, law enforcement authorities have conducted more than 241,400 searches, with 44 hits, between 1 January and 21 March.Switzerland so far is the only country checking all incoming passports against the Interpol database.

As an extension of this Interpol claim that the identification of Battisti and his fraudulent documents (he is said to have had 2 forged French passport when captured) resulted from the use of the SLTD database.

Battisti was the subject of an Interpol Red Notice 20 years ago when he escaped from Italy which was the basis for the Interpol action. An Interpol Red Notice is not an international arrest warrant - and person should be, they warn - " considered innocent until proven guilty."

The Boys with the Toys anxious to show they work.... International Terrorist caught .... Sarkozy shows the Iron fist ... Prodi looks good at home .... Ticks all the boxes.
