Brian Parkyn, pacifist Labour MP and carbon fibre pioneer dies
Brian Parkyn has died, one time Labour MP , conscientous objector who defeated Christopher Soames in the 1966 General Election. A chemical engineer who pioneered whilst working at Scott Bader the production of carbon fibres and associated polyester resins for producing composite materials in which the UK led he held several importantPatents
Scott Bader started by Ernest Bader he gave the company to his employees. the employees govern the company themselves - as employees. They still make Polyester resins for composite materials.
"Because we have no external shareholders we cannot be acquired. That makes us a great company to do business with. "
The Science Museum has a sample of the first carbon fibre made in 1965, in glass tube, "1st sample of carbon fibres made by Courtaulds heat treated at R.A.E. for 1 hour at 2500 degree C. on 15.9.65 ( signed) W. Watt CPM Dept RAE"
Since then Courtaulds have disappeared and the Japanese lead the world in Poly acrylonitrile (PAN) carbon fibre methods and industrial production of which 3o tons goes into every Airbus 380 and even more will into the Boeing Dreamliner 487. PAN based fibres PAN base carbon fibre combines high strength, rigidity, light weight, high temperature and corrosion resistant, with excellent electric performance.Learn more here
