Sjt Reed of 6th Rifles dies in explosion ,138th member of British forces to die in Afghanistan since the start of operations in October 2001.

The BBC report Territorial Army reservist Serjeant Christopher Reed, 25, of the 6th Battalion The Rifles , engaged to be married, was killed on routine patrol in Garmsir District of Helmand province.

The MOD report , just released, says Serjeant Reed was attached to C Company of the 1st Battalion The Rifles (1 RIFLES) Operational Mentoring and Liaison Team (OMLT) Battle Group and was Second in Command of his team of 8 Riflemen working alongside their Afghan National Army (ANA) counterparts.

Serjeant Reed was killed by an improvised explosive device (IED) whilst conducting a vehicle patrol alongside the ANA in the desert of Helmand.

Sjt Reed's death came a day after Royal Marine Cpl Liam Elms died during a routine patrol in the Sangin district of Helmand alongside Afghan National Army troops.

The type of vehicle and the number and nature of injuries to others at the scene of both explosive incidents have not been released.
