Illegal drugs - the magic disapperaring trick

On Tuesday, October 10, 2006 we reported on Northern Ireland's biggest ever drugs haul today . In the absence of further report , one year ago on Sunday, May 06, 2007 we kept readers up to date with Where are they Now No 231 : 4Tons / £10Mn haul of cannabis in Northern Ireland .

Surprisingly in the 12 months since, we have heard nothing more about this astonishing success in the war on drugs, although On the 11th of October the quantity seized was reported to be 4 tonnes in weight, with street value of £10 Mn. (Euros 14.5 Mn). Local Strangford MP Iris Robinson (wife of 1st Minister Peter) congratulated those who had succeeded in keeping the huge haul off the streets. “It is not yet clear who was responsible for this criminal act or whether there was paramilitary involvement ..." she said at the time.(Pssst!!! it is highly unlikely there are any IRA paramilitaries active in or around Newtownards)

Today BBC Online report that Police have made what is believed to be one of the UK's largest seizures of cocaine, with a street value estimated at £13Mn.(17 Mn. Euros)

It appears that 2 vehicles arrived at a UK port from Europe and Cumbria Police made the seizure.

Six men were arrested, and addresses in Cumbria, Lancashire, Lincolnshire, and Nottinghamshire are being searched.Detective Chief Inspector Jeff Ashton, of Cumbria CID is reported to have said, "I am absolutely delighted with the success of this operation and the fact that we have prevented such a large quantity of cocaine from reaching the streets of Britain."

....well it might have delayed from reaching the streets...
